Amazing coincidences in football

2010 we got the Saints 4 x regular season and 1 x pre-season.

The closest you’ll ever get to that in a 16+ team camp.
Was possible in a 16+ team comp before they got rid of the grand final replay for a drawn grand final, twice during the H&A season, the Qualifying final and then if the grand final was drawn during the replay

Oh of course, my mistake :(

The Season results of the 1910s & 2010s have some noteworthy patterns:

1910 Collingwood premiers, 2010 Collingwood premiers
1911 Collingwood runner up, 2011 Collingwood runner up
1912 Swans runner up, 2012 Swans premiers
1913 St Kilda make first GF but beaten by more experienced Fitzroy; 2013 Fremantle make first GF, but well beaten by Hawthorn
1914 Swans runners up, 2014 Swans runners up
1915 Carlton back to back premiers; 2015 Hawthorn win successive premierships, Carlton are last
1916 Fitzroy win GF from (4th) last, 2016 Bulldogs win GF from 7th
1917 Richmond last, 2017 Richmond premiers

Also one from the WAFL - Peel Thunder have an under 19's player named Jack Sears who has a very distinctive date of birth - 11th September 2001. The World Trade Center's twin towers were the tallest buildings in the world until surpassed in 1973 by Chicago's Sears Tower.

I like this

1918: swans premiers. 2018 well, do the math

Richmond and Melbourne will play the finals series for the first time since 1941 this year
Richmond and Hawthorn could genuinely meet in a final for the first time ever this year

Not on the level of some things in here but would be pretty amazing if two of the strangest anomalies were broken in the same year.

A few local ones:

Last week, North Adelaide had 19 men on the field in the SANFL PF.

In the Grand Final, North won by 19 points and kicked 19 goals.

****

BSR Tigers last year won their A Grade football by 1 point, but lost the A Grade Netball by 1 point.

This year, they won their A Grade Football by 27 points and the Netball won by 27 points.

When WCE played Collingwood in the first week of the finals at home in 1994 their first half score was 6.7. The same as it was this year in 2018. They then had a week off and met Melbourne in a home prelim final and beat them by 65 points kicking 4.7 in the first quarter. In 2018 they kicked 4.8 in the first quarter, and won the prelim final by 66 points with the match being played at home, also a Saturday afternoon game.

The similarity of the first halves of both completely one sided PF's this year.

13m of playing time, 10 pts the difference
27m of playing time, 23 pts the difference
39m of playing time, 42 pts the difference
50-52m of playing time, 53 pts the difference

This will make Eagles fans nervous.

Whenever two Qualifiying Finalists have faced off again against each other in the GF, the winner of the QF has gone on to lose the GF.

2005 WCE def Sydney in QF, Sydney def WCE in GG
2006 Sydney def WCE in QF, WCE def Sydney in GF
2015 WCE def Hawthorn in QF, Hawthorn def WCE in GF
2018 WCE def Collingwood in QF....... And it's WCE vs Collingwood GF

In 2015 at least I think it had to do with just us sh*tting ourselves at the G. Given recent history we shouldn't do that this year. I certainly hope not. And just generally remaining more composed under pressure, and being able to claw our ways back into games. Seem more resilient than the team of '15.

Is it a coincidence that these two look very simular?

2003 Collingwood def Brisbane in QF, Brisbane def Collingwood in GF
And adding to it

All 5 occurrences have involved either West Coast or Collingwood
Thanks!!

Curious, how much further can we go?

Another example is 1993 Carlton def Essendon in SF, the Essendon def Carlton in GF

Not gonna disagree.

But the stats don't lie - you were better off dropping the QF lol
