The other Norm Smith curse

Since the sacking of Norm Smith, no other coach have won 4 flags. David Parkin, Tom Hafey, Ron Barassi, Allan Jeans, Leigh Matthews, Kevin Sheedy and Alastair Clarkson are all stuck on 4 premierships.

Not AFL, but the thread does say 'football'.

It is an amazing coincidence that for the fifth week running, Chelsea and Liverpool have mirrored each other's result.

Five games each.

Both teams won 3-0 in their opening match, followed by both teams winning 2-0 in their second match.

They then played each other, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

That was followed up by both teams winning their next two matches by a scoreline of 3-0.

Lol I have thought of that good one !!!

Geelong and Melbourne have never met in a VFL-AFL GF despite both teams being there from 1897 and participating in many GFs.

However they have just missed each other by one year several times.

In 1925 Geelong played Collingwood and in 1926 Melbourne played Collingwood.

In 1953 Geelong played Collingwood and then in 1954 Melbourne played the Bulldogs.

In 1963 Geelong played Hawthorn and then in 1964 Melbourne played Collingwood.

In 1988 Melbourne played Hawthorn and in 1989 Geelong played Hawthorn.

In 2020 Geelong played Richmond and in 2021 Melbourne will play the Bulldogs.

Somewhat bizarre factoid IMO - from 1951 until 1964 Geelong or Melbourne contested 12 out of the 14 GFs but never against each other.

Also Geelong in the 1950s did what I assume no other team has done in the one decade - they acquired back-to-back flags (in 1951/2) AND back-to-back wooden spoons (in 1957/8). Richmond in the 1980s is perhaps slightly similar - flag in 1980, GF in 1982 and wooden spoons in 1987 and 1989.

The only two clubs in the competitions history to drop out - University and Fitzroy - played each other in VAFA Premier B in 2014... exactly 100 years after their previous meeting, University's last VFL season, 1914.

Must be a record for time between games played.
1890 - Port Adelaide vs South Melbourne
1997 - Port Adelaide vs Sydney

Dennis Cometti's last game of TV commentary was a Grand Final involving the Western Bulldogs

His last game of radio commentary will be a Grand Final involving the Western Bulldogs

Completing the coincidence, Den himself is a Doggies supporter
Dennis is more than a Doggies supporter. He was on the list in 1971 but only played reserves.

How good that he can retire twice after Bulldog Grand Finals.

1890 - Port Adelaide vs South Melbourne
1997 - Port Adelaide vs Sydney

But they were not in the same completion in 1890. So a reverse situation, but not exactly 100 years.

There were a lot of cross over matches in the early days. Can anyone find one 100 years in between? Only Port Adelaide vs a Vic team can be possible.

1954 - Footscray progress to the grand final vs Melbourne by playing on 11 September with Melbourne beating Geelong
2021 - Western Bulldogs progress to the grand final vs Melbourne by playing on 11 September with Melbourne beating Geelong

every finals opponent the Lions have played over the last three years have gone on to make that years Grandfinal.

2019: Richmond, GWS
2020: Richmond, Geelong
2021: Melbourne, Bulldogs

Interesting to know that Australia’s last notable earthquake was in 2016, the year the dogs won their second flag.

Also, one of Australia’s most damaging earthquake happened in 1954, the year the dogs won their first flag

Is yesterday’s earthquake a sign that the Doggies could be housing just their third Cup
