The Tokyo Olympic coincidence has held up

1964 - Tokyo hosts the Summer Olympics, Melbourne win the flag after winning the minor premiership

2021 - Tokyo hosts the Summer Olympics, Melbourne win the flag after winning the minor premiership

There is still the chance that the Claremont Tigers in the WAFL and their feline cousins from the SANFL the South Adelaide Panthers can win the 2021 premierships in these leagues, with both of them like Melbourne triumphant in 1964. And while Claremont is a WAFL powerhouse that has won plenty of flags since 1964, like Melbourne South Adelaide have a premiership drought of 57 years to break. Can the Panthers do it? Hope so.

Melbourne have a remarkable record in Olympic years.

They have won premierships in 1900, 1948, 1956, 1960, 1964 and now 2021. They also won in 1940, with the Olympics scheduled to be held in Tokyo but cancelled due to World War Two.

Melbourne also lost Grand Finals in the Olympic years of 1988 and 2000.

At half time in both '61 and '21, they'd kicked 5 behinds and the opposition had kicked 9
