It seemed like just about every time Carlton got it inside 50, they had completely torn through our so-called 'zone', allowing for very deep and efficient entries, a lot of the time to loose players.
I can't recall many times where the ball was hovering around their 50m arc being contested by both teams - if they got possession going forward, it just went straight in.

I'm sure the low inside 50 count will change next week though, the Bulldogs are in a whole different league.

Pretty much it. The opposition has kicked ridiculously easy goals this year.

Again the Bulldogs only had 42 inside 50s but won by 50. We had 47 ourselves. The discrepancy this time isn't a matter of goalkicking as the the Dogs had many more shots.

I don't know what is going on, it appears that the opposition are just dining out on our mistakes and catching us on the break in a counterattacking fashion. At the same time we are trying to do the same and play on the counterattack, but are just shit at it at the moment. It is the football version of playing 1 up front in soccer.

The end result is extremely low I50s for both sides.

Easy money when it works and if it doesn't you don't get in the 50. IT really pushes that stat up.

I wouldn't mind seeing a little man on man when a couple of goals go against us.

It must be soul destroying to work so hard and give up such easy goals. I think we gotta change the style or tweak it, we aren't good enough at the moment for it.

To borrow from basketball, because that's what it resembles - our transition D is poor and we need to get better at 'locating the shooters' on the fast break.

Thats alot of it. There were many times where we had them under the pump in our forward line, and just couldnt quite capitalise. Often it would result in an easy goal at the other end. I hate it when the opposition strolls into goal unmanned.

Do the Crows structure their zone higher up the ground so it's hard to get the ball through the middle but if their opponent does get it through there's less Crow numbers in the D50, so easier to score? Just a guess.

If we remove this, we are half way there. Its not that far off, it does seem like it is but it isn't and what a better game to turn it round than the Showdown.

I said in the thoughts on the game thread that the opposition look the most dangerous when we have the ball. If we got the ball less then the opposition would score fewer goals.

I would love to know if man-on-man is even on the radar at Crow HQ?

If we ever get back to fully executing the game plan, oppositions will just revert to man-on-man on us (Like Collingwood in the semi), and we will be left with our pants down again.

There have been multiple opportunities for the Crows to go man-on-man in the last five weeks(or the preseason), when we've had nothing to lose, but I suspect it will never, ever happen.

My feeling is that the players need to be reminded, physically, of how the basics of the game play out: fifty/fifty - desperation wins. I don't think they want to play the game plan at the moment. And fair enough. It's making them look like ass-hats. Debilitating turnovers and easy goals.

Last night was much, much better than the Carlton game, which was a travesty.

And I feel confident that things will improve, but to what end?

Uh Collingwood was gifted that game.... if Rutten was nowhere near his man and zoning there would of been no issue.
It's not any zone issue here you guys just have your head up your asses.
What causes a lot of back line failure for adelaide is actually going with their player and not the ball when it is incoming and spoilable they are looking at their opponent.

The opposition score from short pass turnovers and poorly contested stoppages, it's as simple as that. Often turning into a quick long kick that adelaide do not do.

McLeod last night had absolutely nothing to kick to at one stage, he could of passed around behind him and risked a turnover but instead kicked it to space long. Consequently the defense had time to block things up and the free bulldog retriever had noone to go to within the 50.

Several kicks that went to the goalsquare for adelaide were either marked by Tipett or registered a behind that were close to scrambled goals, behinds mean kick outs and kicking out is one of the hardest things to do these days.

Not going long with obvious forward line mismatches is ridiculous, handpassing 30 meters as a forward 50 entry is a disgrace and doing it anywhere on the field only puts your team mate under pressure. That play is stupid where as the handball off to a player 2 metres away turning your back to the play as maric does most times is cowardly as is that which you get from several others handpassing to a player 20cms away instead of kicking it themself and handpassing to Thompson no less.
226 handpasses 165 kicks vs the winning sides 235 kicks 192 handpasses.
Not too shocking that you lose turning the ball over with terrible short skills.
They drop and fumble constantly..

Nick Maxwell claimed during the quarter time break that we concede less inside 50s than any other club. Pro-stats would appear to support him, listing us as 2nd best behind Sydney.

So.. we concede an average of 45.5 I50s (Geelong and Footscray both concede 56+ so it's not an insignificant difference), yet somehow we concede an average of 15.12 per game (27 scoring shots on average). That's an appalling conversion rate of 1 goal every 3 I50s and 1 scoring shot every 1.7 entries.

What this tells me, shock horror, is that our zone is actually working a treat. Teams are having an awful time trying to penetrate it. Our biggest problem is turnovers, which inevitably result in easy goals. I'd estimate that 10-12 of our 15 goals each week come as a direct result of turnovers by the Crows in critical parts of the ground.

Eliminate the turnovers and we start winning games - and winning them easily. Easier said than done.
