Amazing teams that could have been...

It was a silly system that was rightfully changed but you literally said this:

Every team in the top 4 this year had a double chance. If Adelaide lost in week one in 1993 they would've been out.

There is no but. It was an addition, not a but.
Thankfully you get the absurd thing about Crows that year. They lose week one they were out. Win and the jump to second ranking with double chance to make grand final over the second ranked team losing to first.
Nutty professor was AFL chief advisor during the mid 1990's.

1991 Finals (A Final 6)
Due to the eagles losing the first final and Melbourne winning the eagles had to travel to Melbourne for the rest of the finals.
Such an unfair system back then.

1st finishes 3 games clear at top, loses at home to 2nd in the first week and as a result has to play away to the winner of 5th v 6th.

Essendon 2012 - 2016. What could have been if only they hadn't done so poorly by their club in the PEDS scandal. If they hadn't have been doping they could have a reasonable crack at the flag in 2014 given their list (Hibberd/Hooker/Ryder/Melksham/Carlisle/Heppell et al).

Although getting over Hawks/Sydney/Geelong and Freo that year might have been a stretch, but still. What a waste

I'd actually nominate early 2000s Port Adelaide. 2003 they finished three (!!!) games on top, and choked - they were probably the best side of 2002, as well. They did eventually get one, but honestly they should have won several.
