The season really hasn't started...... the next 8 weeks will determine who is a pretender and who is a legitimate chance.

I'm not convinced Adelaide can keep going..... and think they will miss out on top four making it hard for them to get in the Granny....

WC will can stay in cruise control and get a top 4 spot.... which if they play their cards right will also hand them a home prelim.... almost guaranteeing GF spot..... Which leaves 1 spot left.

That spot is very much open.......

On a side note when is the last time Richmond made the finals and failed to make atleast the prelim?????
Adelaide have a top 4 spot pretty much booked with their draw.

I think the OPs point is not so much blowing smoke up our own selves but more the nature of this season. The race for the flag is wide open. There are 10 or 11 sides all capable of pulling off a grand final win this year imho and we are one of them. As stated a lot of things would have to go our way (two schools of thought here - 1. they never do or 2. the wheel will turn and we will have an over abundance of good luck to compensate for 30 years of bad).
The competition is as even as I have ever seen it, and every team is having good days and bad days.
West Coast - massive home advantage will have them finish close to the top but they have looked vulnerable at times.
Essendon and Adelaide have had superb seasons thus far, but who really expects them to dominate the whole year?
Geelong, Carlton, Collingwood - Not the dominant season we were all expecting from these three.
Sydney, Hawthorn, St Kilda - up and down season for each of these teams.
Freo & Kangaroos - can't see it especially the roos.

As I said. It's wide open.

Based on that it would have to be a top 4 in no particular order of Adelaide(for reasons you refer to)
Eagles (a lock)
Pies (no denying them)
Bombers(history suggests a start like this should be enough barring disaster).

Probably the most likely, but not certain.
A point I've heard over the past couple of days:
From a Pies fan - with their injuries, and players who had major injuries last year, he reckons that those players will fatigue towards the end of the year. But again, they will most likely be top 4 and premiership favourites.
The bombers are an interesting one. I can see us being hyped up like they are if we start going on a roll.

You are probably right though.

The bombers will have played 7 of the bottom 8 sides after Round 10. We would have only played 2 in the same time. They have had the easiest of draws and we have had the hardest

Forget the lid for a minute, I'm going to make a statement that will invite plenty of debate but at the same time raise some interesting points.

We can win the flag this year.

Saturday's win may have been our equivalent of Geelong's 157pt smashing of us in 2007 in marking the arriving of a new and more powerful Richmond - not to the extent of Geelong, but it may instill the self-belief needed for us to create an imposing winning streak that will bring us into finals contention, perhaps even top four (we would need to win one or more of the bolded games below).

Italicised are teams that have continually beaten us in the past, bold are the tough games. All games are winnable, the bold ones being the likely losses.
Saints, Freo, GWS, Adelaide (A), Melbourne, Gold Coast, North, Carlton, Brisbane (A), Doggies, Freo (A), Essendon, Port.

Given the tightness of the ladder this year, with respect to the run for the flag, anyone who is in form come finals-time can win it, and the difference between about 3rd or 4th and 11th will likely be about 1-2 games. It is a close year.

As a result, luck would need to be on our side particularly regarding injuries as i don't believe we have that great a depth yet, and we would need to continue this form (similarly to Geelong in 2007) and win the close matches that we lost earlier this year.

Call me deluded or whatever you want, but I believe it can be done*, and if the team believe it as well and play like they do, who knows what could happen.

Just some food for thought. Imma pop the lid back on now.

*albeit still extremely unlikely.
I'm 24. My dad drove my little ass all the way out to Waverly (spelling?) oval to watch Gary Ablett snr destroy us. I can remember the walk though the mudpit back to the car, very disappointing. I can't remember much of the game. I can however vaguely remember the game vs Essendon when knights and Campbell ripped it up!

I know no success as a Richmond supporter. I have lived in Perth the last 15 years so i don't get to watch my beloved tiges anywhere near as much as i'd like.

The point being as far as i can remember this is our best team in the last 15 years :D If we get an epic run going i recon we can topple anyone, anywhere! Go the tiges!!!
T4p loving the idea!

Doesn't sound quite the same when you include us as one of those 7 "easy" games. We're closer than the 4 game gap though.

Like Tugga, I see no problem with posters daring to dream. Like Tugga, I just can't bring myself to get too excited just yet. At the moment I'm happy to sit up the back of the bandwagon and let others make some noise. Doesn't mean we don't support the side and the ride we're about to go on.

However, like me I reckon Tugga will be up and about in a week or 2, especially if we beat both the Saints and Dockers. Then we'll have something concrete to get excited about.

I'm exactly the same, but I feel this is a good time to make my prediction and get in before the excitement. If it happens...

All good, having been burnt too many times in the past, I'm simply holding back on thinking flags just yet. I'm on the finals bandwagon though, seat 1A.

T4P, your opinion is valid and worthy.
I just don't like the talk of looking too far ahead saying 'We should beat the Dogs' 'We should beat the Suns' 'We will lose to Collingwood'.
It doesn't work that way.
We could come out beat St Kilda by 7 goals this week and then lose to Freo at the G the week after.
I am not questioning the legitimacy of your thread, just the timing of it. I agree with nut in that the season has only just started. I think you've jumped the gun by at least a month.

Fairytales can come true lol
I think by september the top teams will be going up a gear while our younger players will be slowing down a bit. Hopeully we keep up this improvement, scrape into finals and give a strong signal for 2013.

One big advantage we'd have if we are in the mix come September is that we are NOT expected to win it. For such a young group anything will be possible and has been said - it's just a even competition at the moment.

All that can change very quickly, e.g. an injury to Cotch, lids or Ivan and we're toast...- but I agree. It is possible.
And I love the fact that you had the guts to put it out there this early. You will be a legend if you are right. :thumbsu:

(please please please be right).

I don't think anyones saying we are going to win the flag. We are just saying IF we get on a big win streak, that it's not out of the question.

That's why I'm posting it now, not when everyone else will be posting it (assuming I'm right). Getting in early, risking looking like a fool in a few weeks when we lose to the giants

and part of what I'm saying is about how 'it doesn't work that way', it further highlights how the closeness of this ladder could mean anyone could do well come later this season, even us!

Though I'd almost bet my left testicle that we won't lose to Freo at the G.

Sorry, but after being a witness to the past 30 years of pain, I have seen episodes like this where supporters get on their high horses after one win and then return to being rabid ferals the week after when we lose.
Do I think it's different this time. Actually, yes I do. But I need to see more proof than one win against a mentally soft overrated opponent.
Not having a go at you personally OP, but these sorts of threads only make us look stupid. It taints us all with the same overhyped brush, and it's a brush I don't want to be associated with any longer.
All I want is some realistic expectation of where we are at. Saying we could perhaps win the premiership this season is ludicrous and cringeworthy. Again, not having a go at you because many, many have done it before you as well.
For once in my life I would just like to see supporters not go overboard and actually wait for the right moment to start talking like this. Just once.
That's my say on it. Doesn't make me right. Doesn't make me wrong. Just responding to the post in a civilised way (or at least attempting to).
Carry on.
Can i ask you this Tugga. I assume you think we will make the finals? If you had to tip, yes or no, right now, I assume you'd say yes as would most Tiger fans.

Now hypothetically that happens, and we end up against Sydney or the Saints in our EF. I'm tipping you would back us a decent chance of winning that game, though probably not favs. Now once we're in a semi final against most likely an Essendon or Adelaide, I don't think many would be writing us off.

Sneak a win there and suddenly we're in a prelim. Then we'd be up against it, but from a prelim who knows what could happen.

I don't think we should get ahead of ourselves and I think we are still a 35% chance of missing the 8. But if we deliver and do make it, and go in with some momentum, there's no reason we couldn't go in deep considering the evenness and shitness of the competition this year.

Haha, fair enough then.

But you get my point. I think there's a fairly high chance we will miss finals, and then a very high chance we will get knocked out early if we do make it. But if ever a team was going to surprise everyone from a 6th 7th 8th position, this would be the year to do it.

And I think we're possibly the most dangerous of the teams fighting for 8th because our best is so damn good. Very unlikely we'd be able to play 4 quarters of 4 finals games at this level, but not impossible :thumbsu:
