Looking specifically for recommended reads covering the US revolution, starting with a generalist view of what happened, when and why.

Any ideas?

Any senior high school textbook would be a good starting point

For example:

Thanks - was thinking more along the lines of something like Shelby Foote's 3 volumes on the US Civil War.

If you want a generalist view of what happened, when and why, then start with a senior textbook and move onto more specific works.

It depends what your level of pre-knowledge is.

Not a book, haven't read one about the revolution since I was a kid :)
but Ken Burns had a decent multi-part docu on it while back. Might make a good primer for you.

EDIT: actually I'm wrong, it wasn't Burns who did it. If its the one I'm thinking of it was in 1994. Still good, and done in the Burns style. Burns is making one at the moment that is scheduled of release this year.
