Twice this week in separate articles on afl.com.au I have seen Collingwood referred to by the author as the "Woods", for example "Woods coach Nathan Buckley...."

This reminds me so much of nicknames I often hear in the NFL, for example calling the San Francisco 49ers the "Niners" and so forth.

Is "Woods" a longstanding Collingwood nickname that I am unaware of or is this just another example of the attempted Americanisation of our game?

Collingwood have been called “The Woods” for a hundred years.
Carn The Woods is almost as common a cry as Carn The Pies.
The main Collingwood business coterie group is called The Woodsmen and has existed for over 40 years.

Essendon - The Dons
Fitzroy - The Roys
Collingwood- The Woods

Nothing to do with America

Fair enough, literally had not read it before seeing it twice this week. But have heard of the Dons and Roys before.
