A photo snapped inside the famous Amityville Horror house in Long Island, New York. The house was empty at the time and the camera was equipped with a motion detector. The boy resembles one of the Defao boys who was killed in the house years before.]

One of the main issues is that the family that moved in directly after the murders claimed all kinds of demonic/paranormal goings on (the basis of the movie and book), but no real evidence, and the family that has lived in the house since then (30 years) has said that nothing has happened while they have been living there. So there is real conjecture as to whether the original stories were all made up for money.

This photo is interesting in that it is most likely a little boy in the picture, but no one can categorically say that there wasn't anyone in the house that night, as this camera was set to run all night unmanned. There is still much debate as to who/what is in the photo. There only seems to be general agreement that the photo has not been doctored.

Can someone do a TLDR of the story?

Young man massacres his family as they sleep, claims he was possessed by demons at his trial. Next family moves in, claims they have to flee the house after assorted horrors happen. Sell their story, becomes popular book and movie. New family moves into house, nothing happens. Story is generally discredited (at the least it seems wildly exaggerated), but remains popular.

This s**t happens. Authorities deny everything, always. Even partake in confusing the issue, attacking the witnesses ect. So you just don't know.

Wasn't the house on the scene of Indian massacre/burial ground?

All seems a but suss, No matter what way you lean on this

The Lutz's and Jay Anson have admitted fabricating the entire story.

Yeah, this is true. Apparently when they bought the house they over-extended themselves financially so contacted Ronald DeFeo's lawyers (during his trial) with the story and suggested they use it as his defence. They were also looking to sell the story and/or sell the house to recoup their money.

The TLDR of the original story:
Ronald De Feo murdered (shot) his parents and siblings in the house. He initially claimed he found the bodies, but was quickly charged with all murders.

The truth behind The Amityville Horror was finally revealed when Butch DeFeo's lawyer, William Weber, admitted that he, along with the Lutzes, "created this horror story over many bottles of wine." The house was never really haunted; the horrific experiences they had claimed were simply made up. Jay Anson further embellished the tale for his book, and by the time the film's screenwriters had adapted it, any grains of truth that might have been there were long gone. While the Lutzes profited handsomely from their story, Weber had planned to use the haunting to gain a new trial for his client. George Lutz reportedly still claims that the events are mostly true, but has offered no evidence to back up his claim.

The one thing nobody has ever been able to explain in this case is how Ronald Defeo JNR managed to shoot dead his mother, father, two sisters and two brothers with a high powered rifle and nobody in the neighborhood heard a thing, nor did any of the Defeo family awaken to the gun fire in the house. There were theories that Defeo drugged his family and/or used a silencer, but post mortems, forensic evidence and ballistics disproved these theories.

Defeo's story has changed many times in the more than 40 years that have gone by since the murders and given many people connected with the case have since died, the real truth about what happened that night will probably never be known. But regardless of what happened, the absolute certainty is that a powerful gun was discharged six times to kill six people in the early hours of the morning on a quiet suburban street - and nobody heard anything.
