The way the young Irish Magpie appeared to come out of the Buchanan incident fairly dazed, comparisons were made to Ben Johnson's season-ending bump on Daniel Bell the previous week. But the match review panel assessed Buchanan's actions as reckless, high and of body contact, and offered the Swan 325 demerit points – reduced to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction owing to a five-year good record.

Should the Swans take an early guilty plea, the charge will be further downgraded to 182.81 points and a one-match ban, meaning Buchanan would be available to rejoin his team in the first week of the finals.

Great news.

I must admit, I thought it looked like a pretty serious hit and I thought, judging by the MRP's recent suspensions, that he'd go for at least 4 weeks. How it worked out to be 1 week I don't know, perhaps I don't understand the rule properly, but you Sydney guys must be pretty wrapped with that and the fact that you'll have him back for the finals! Lucky boy!:D

One week thats a massive win for us and Amon :D

Amon's been good in fits and starts. To give up a 50 in that situation is a failure in terms of mission-critical acts, late as.

Schmidt is a goal-kicker, hopefully he can kick 3 this week.

Hopefully.

Maybe I'm doing the thing that I despise and not giving the guy a chance but, here we go - is Amon tradebait?

No, he isn't tradebait!

3 weeks for reckless, high and of body contact, 325 demerit points. Reduced to 243.75 demerits and a two week ban due to 5 year good record. Same good record rule that Hally availed himself of the last, infamous time he found himself before the tribunal.

Bmon Buchanan took the early plea, reducing the 2 weeks to one. Luckily, undisciplined play is not usually a part of the Swans' game so when we do go up it's not as bad as it might be for other sides.

Would be nice to get a 1st rounder for him but nah don't think so.

Just for argument's sake, who do we have that can replace him? Who has his speed? Flipper Philips? JMo? Around my place we refer to Schmidt as the Can Man because he has one of the bigger tookus'/backsides in the comp, he's good enough in the clinches and he's a damn good goal-kicker who's nailed a couple late in the game and well under pressure.

Bmon kan't kick goals and I think his form this year has been as up and down as anyones.

Snides and Schmidt would be the ones I'd be thinking of.

Schnides has his place and he kan kick goals; in my humble O, Schmidt's seized his opportunity and is certain to be a part of the team. I'm more interested in the youngsters. Anyone there besides JMo and The Wisp (Phillips)?

Matthew Laidlaw. :)

Daniel O'Keefe would have been in the mix but he's out for the season with an ankle injury I think.

Laidlaw.

I like the sound of him in his profile. Skilled, hard-bodied and smidge taller than Bmon. How's his speed? Who's seen him play? Kan he kick a goal?

Apparently, he's one of the fastest at the club. He played one game against Geelong at Skilled Stadium and got 9 disposals. I'm not sure though about the kicking goals side of things. But, he is a promising young player. Should start to make his move next year hopefully. :thumbsu:

Doesn't really have to be a goal kicker but it really hurts when scoring opportunities are flubbed. 3-edgded sword that doesn't reward the efforts of team mates, fails to put on scoreboard pressure and lifts the other team. The only reason I bring it up is because Bmon's not a goal kicker. In terms of depth, anyone else around for next year maybe?

That's why I hope Adam Schneider keeps on improving next year. We really need him to become an outside/goalkicking midfielder who can kick 1 or 2 goals a game and average around 20 - 25 disposals. He's one player I have in mind to play that sort of role for us.

Buchanan is no big lost in my opinion. Sure he adds some speed and grunt in the midfield that we do lack, but he has failed to deliver upon his normal 05/06 standards this year and hence I'm not upset at losing him for this week, nor would I have been if we lost him for longer.

In the short term give his role to Fosdike (ie he gets MORE gametime) and bring Schmidt back into the side. Long Term we have Jarred Moore who if fit can play a simular midfield/small forward role as a replace/backup.

DOK is more of a Nathan Brown (the broken leg at Richmond one) type and Simon Phillips is a Forward Pocket who really isn't suited to the midfield. Laidlaw is a half back flanker in the Malceski/Kennelly role.

That should answer everything.

'Outside / goal kicking midfielders' very rarely average 20-25 possessions a game. If you look at the elite / high possession inside midfielders, most are averaging around 25 possessions a game. And frequently those players will pick up two or three in one passage of play, something much less likely for an 'outside' ball carrier.

If Schneider could average 16-18 possessions a game and throw the odd 22-25 possession game in, as well as kicking 25 goals, he'd be a more than useful member of the team. And to be fair to him, that's pretty much what's he's achieved this year. He's had a few quiet games but overall he's been more consistent than in the past and has shown a more rounded game.

I suspect he might be capable of more, mind you. He shares so many of Willo's attributes - except that absolute gut-busting work ethic. If he decides he wants to be it, I still think he could become a Willo type, vintage 2001-3.

As for Amon, he's had a decidedly ordinary year but in 2005-6 he was one of our most important players. And a couple of weeks ago he started to show glimpses of that form. Like almost every player on our list (I'd exclude only B2, Goodes, Eski, ROK, Kennelly and the "OAPs") he's tradeable for a star who wants to come or to fill a gaping hole in our list but I wouldn't want him to be actively thrown around as bait just for the sake of it.

Ditto, with cheese.

I have to agree. Out of the injury list and Amons suspension the one i am most concerned about is Spida. What would we do going through the finals without a fully fit ruck duo. Im not saying Jolly couldnt do it alone but he would need some to give him a rest and it scares me having goodes helping out in there.

I can't believe that Amon Buchanan got 1 week, it is simply ridiculous. Now before you come at me with the logic from the tribunal with points and the like, let me get one thing clear: I am not arguing on how the tribunal came to the decision but am simply voicing my sheer concern about the system that is in place. Now there has been some controversy over the system throughout the AFL's history, and most prominently, during the last several years. It is safe to say, purely with common sense as my logic, that Buchanan should have received many more than 1 week.

Now, in the previous weeks, a hard yet accidental head-high bump from Ben Johnson received 6 weeks. Then, more recently, an unsighted incident involving Stevie Baker received 7 weeks. Now, an incident occurs which could have easily been prevented, is easily seen to be intentional (Buchanan wanted to hit Clarke), and could have potentially caused major damage to a young body, and the perpetrator receives 1 week. Where is the logic in this system, please can someone tell me?

I'm keen to repeat that I can see with the present system, how this decision was made. But my point is that using logic, the system is flawed and injust. Let's face it, Amon Buchanan deserved more than one week, for what was essentially a blatantly dangerous shirtfront.
