An American just asked me - "Why do you have absurd club songs?"

Tell him that over here, tradition in sport actually means something to the fans.

The only tradition that Americans seem to hold onto is organised religion, and look where that's got them.

Basically in the NFL they don't have club songs, the teams just run out to some random rock music or whatever. The concept of singing a club song seems baffling to the Americans, and this particular guy also isn't fond of our AFL outfits (they look ridiculous apparently).

So erm, as best as you can explain it, what would your response be to such a question? Tactful responses preferrably :p

My reply would be " why do you have a world series and not invite the world ?" followed by .."why does your boring game stop every 5 seconds for half a dozen coaches to talk to the players ?"

Dumb yanks

Cos we can.............

Actually when the Crows were formed we didnt have one. For our first game they had to find something to play and someone suggested the "Here We Go Camry Crow" song Toyota had for advertising. Worst mistake in our clubs 19 year history.

Don't the US colleges have "Fight Songs"??

As for the uniforms at least we dont wear tights, padding and helmets.

Thats crap. The Football teams all have 'Fight songs'. Alot of our songs are actually closely related to some of these.

Thats funny

Sydney's song is a version of the Notre Dame fight song

Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame,
Wake up the echoes cheering her name,
Send a volley cheer on high,
Shake down the thunder from the sky.
What though the odds be great or small
Old Notre Dame will win over all,
While her loyal sons are marching
Onward to victory.

They're Americans, who cares what they think. American's are insular and think they're the centre of the universe. In reality they're all ****** up. To them only their own national sports exist in the world and when their club win they're champions of the world. There's no real tradition in their sports and they're barely understand international sport. Michael Phelps is a way bigger hero here than he is in his own country, many there who have barely heard of him.

Let's not put them on a pedestal. Look at the state of their country.

Here we go, the typical Aussie response to anything NFL, "Its soft cause they wear padding"

If you actually sat down and watched a couple of games you would realise why the hell they wear padding. Unlike our game these days you are still able to legally lay someone the #### out without getting rubbed out for 2 weeks, seriously some of the hits I have seen in the NFL, without padding, you would never recover.

And to be honest who hasnt felt a pang of shame when listening to Freo belt out Freo Heave Ho after a stirring win :p
