OK, since I'm sick to death of hearing things like "bring Perrie back at CHF" and "we need a packbuster like Perrie," I thought I'd take a crack at one potential forward structure.

FF: Jericho
FP: Carey
FP: Rutten

CHF: Stevens
HFF: Johncock
HFF: Bode

And before I get shouted down, here are my reasons:

#1. I know I haven't put any crumbers in the pocket positions. I did this because it seems that most of our crumbs don't come from players playing in the pockets. Plus, I like the fact of having a really tall forward line so that when we bomb it in (which is a habit we can't seem to shake), there's actually somebody there who can mark it.

#2. Would you please all give it a rest with respect to Perrie? He is the new Beinke, IMHO. The guy does NOT take very many contested marks, he does not bust packs (for the simple fact that he's not that big - he's tall, but not big). Stevens can at least take a contested mark but he can't kick for goal, so CHF would suit him well, IMHO. Also, Johncock and Bode seem to me to be very good crumbers who are good at running onto a ball and scoring on the run from within 50.

Anyway, those are my thoughts. Any others would be welcome, but please try to keep the sledging to a minimum and post potential ideas for the forward line.

I agree that Stevens has been good for us, just the one obvious problem as you mention.

What role do you see for Welsh? I think he should stay deep forward. He can mark, crumb and tackle and he's still only 25. Ideally he'd stay on as one of our more experienced players as we go through the rebuilding process.

So I'd have Welsh at deep forward with Jericho. Only room for one of Rutten and Carey.

Thanks Dave, I knew I was forgetting somebody. :)

I like Welsh a lot, but I just forgot about him. I guess he could come in on one of the HFF's in place of say, Bode; although I've seen Bode crumb more goals than Welsh lately.

I like Welsh's defensive work inside 50 though. Hmmm... that's a tough one...

OK, say we swap Welsh in for Bode?

OK, I've figured it out. Welsh in for Bode for this year, then next year when Carey retires, he moves to FP with Bode coming back in at HFF.

I'm not sure how you guys get your high opinion of Welsh! This is what, he's 5th season with us and how many times has he kicked a bag of goals? I'd be happy if he chipped in with 2 a game but he doesn't even do that most of the time. He's not going to get better at his age.

As far as Perrie goes, he's got more potential than Welsh but lacks confidence. I think Ayres should stop ****-farting around with him, he either plays him or trades him. We could certainly have done with one more tall player on Saturday night.

Burton and Welsh to be the leading targets and carey to stay in the square for the long bomb to him

HFF Jerico
CHF Perrie
HFF Johncock

Jerico is a bit smaller than Chad Cornes and could play that postion he used to play for the power ( before he became the best ever centre half back har har) so allow him to lead up to the wing thus giving perrie room to move around the 50 m mark ( lets not expect him to become the next modra)

Perrie is a strong mark and coud play CHF the same way matty Robran used to. Just make a contest and become a target to straighten us up. Perrie is never going to become a j brown or w tredrea so all we should ask from his is a strong contest and try and bring the ball to ground for stiffy, Macca, roo, and the on ballers running by.

Stiffy should not have any rules, Allow him to change on the ball or crum at careys feet and kick goals ( easy hay)

Next year give F Watts the role carey has now. Give him 12- 15 games in the forward pocket before throwing him on to the half forward line and swap him with parrie for a quarter hear and a quarter there for another 12- 15 games before expecting him to make CHF his own so after 30 games he should be ready for CHF at AFL level

Perrie dosn't take many contested marks??????

In 2003 Perrie was our leading mark taker and out leading contested marker. Actually he was ranked in top 15 in the AFL for contested marks. A hell of a lot better than we got from a lot of other players.

Perrie is 191 cm and 96 kg and if you stand next to him he is a pretty big boy. Stevens is a stick figure who would get snapped in half as a permanent CHF. Stevens is 88 kg compared to Perrie's 96 kg.

Yes Perrie does drop marks but he also holds onto a few. Perrie will never be a Tredrea or a Jonathan Brown BUT he is a workhorse who WILL give you a contest.

The sooner Perrie is our CHF the better.

I like that line up. It will kick you goals and has some marking power in it.

Yeah sorry. I meant to say 20.

Still doesn't escape the fact that he is our best option at CHF behind Mark Stevens.

Watts is the future and is still a fair way off.

F Welsh Carey Jericho

HF Johncock Perrie Bode

Welsh and Carey are both on thin ice though after poor starts to the season.

Rutten can replace Carey if he doesn't shape up very soon.

Burton to replace Welsh in the forward line as we have midefield cover for him.

Same forward line as Jars, but different configeration.

F: Bode, Welsh, Carey
HF: Jericho, Perrie, Johncock

Would rotate Welsh & Jericho as leading full forwards. They should become our main targets on the lead within the 45% arc. Carey to play as the stay at home FF, with Bodey & Stiffy crumbing front & square. Perrie must play CHF to give us some structure & a go-to target coming out of defence.
