I think the West Indies, after their pitiful record over the last 2 to 3 years has taken its toll. Some of the players, who have featured in most of the matches would be so dejected, that its impossible to see them overcoming their low morale and start winning consistently.
The West Indies have won only 6 and lost 17 of their last 26 matches, and are on the back 9 consecutive winless matches and 7 consecutive losses. All of those 7 losses have been fairly heavy as well:
4th test v England - loss by an innings and 39 runs
5th test v England - loss by 158 runs
1st test v Australia - loss by an innings and 126 runs
2nd test v Australia - loss by an innings and 27 runs
3rd test v Australia - loss by 5 wickets
4th test v Australia - loss by 352 runs
5th test v Australia - loss by 6 wickets
By the time the South African tour finishes, the streak may extend to 12 consecutive losses. Even If the Windies can manage to get some drawn games, i can't see them winning a match, which would push the winless streak out to 14. Seeing figures like that is very dejecting for a side.

The West Indies selectors are as much to blame as the players. They make it look as though their trying new things, when really, they're doing very little. Giving Carl Hooper the captaincy is going to do very little, if anything to stem the tide.

I did a bit of research, and i found all the West Indies player averages for the last 26 matches. click here to see the averages. As you can see there are no outstanding performances. The only batsmen averaging over 30 are Brian Lara (40.58), Marlon Samuels (34.40), Wavell Hinds (33.45) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (32.12). The only bowlers to have performed well are Courtney Walsh (110 wkts at 21.14), Curtley Ambrose (68 at 20.11), who is retired and Reon King (36 at 26.91). These are just not good enough performances.

What the West Indians need to do is to totally wipe their current squad. And choose, what would essentially be, a totally new squad, with very few of the old faces remaining. Why stick with players who's morale would be so low, that they just accept losing as part of their game.

At the moment their strongest side seems to be (Griffith, Chinderpaul, King were injured for Oz tour): Sherwin Campbell, Adrian Griffith, Wavell Hinds, Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Jimmy Adams, Ridley Jacobs, Nixon McLean, Mervyn Dillon, Reon King, Courtney Walsh.

The players the need to get rid of would be:
Adrian Griffith - struggles a bit, i still put him in the squad because the got no else
Stuart Campbell - old, past his best, struggled recently
Jimmy Adams - as above
Ridley Jacobs - getting odd, will retire soon after South African tour
Nixon McLean - this guys struggles, he is nothing but a hack
Mervyn Dillon - struggles
Courtney Walsh - retiring after South African tour

The young players who should be added to the squad and who have played very few tests, and although this inexperience may seem to be a bad thing, it means they have very little battle scars. Players in this category would be:
Marlon Samuels - has probably done enough to cement a permanant test spot.
Dininath Ramnarine - only played 3 tests - 12 wickets at 19, this is much better than other players. leading wicket taker in WI f/c matches this season (41 at 18.58)
Mahendra Nagamootoo - probably better off as a batting allrounder
Marlon Black - his bowling average is a little high, but so is all the other bowlers
Franklyn Rose - as above

Other players the Windies should look at who are doing well in their domestic competition (which admittedly is not strong):
Leon Garrick - wicketkeeper/batsmen will take over from Jacobs who is 30-odd. 801 runs at 50.06 in f/c matches in WI
Travis Dowlin - 23 year old batmsen - 422 runs at 52.75 this season
Gareth Breese - 24 year old spinner - 36 wickets at 15.11. 3 5 wicket innings
Omari Banks - 18 year old spinner - 21 wickets at 21.09
Sulieman Benn - 19 year old spinner - 32 wicket at 26.00
Ryan O'Neal Hinds - 19 year old spinner - 31 wickets 15.60

So after given all of that, this would be my new look West Indies squad after the SA series:
1. Leon Garrick - 0 Tests
2. Wavell Hinds - 14 Tests
3. Brian Lara - 75 Tests (captain)
4. Shivnarine Chanderpaul - 45 Tests
5. Marlon Samuels - 3 Tests
6. Travis Dowlin - 0 Tests
7. Mehendra Nagamootoo - 2 Tests
8. Dininath Ramnarine - 3 Tests
9. Franklyn Rose - 19 Tests
10. Reon King - 12 Tests
11. Marlon Black - 2 Tests

Squad Players:
12. Adrian Griffith - 14 Tests
13. Omari Banks - 0 Tests
14. Ryan O'Neal Hinds - 0 Tests

Yes, it is very inexperienced, but as i said, the less tests, the less mental scars the player would've suffered.

Do yous think this would be a good initiative for the Windies to take up, or do you think they should keep letting things roll on and presume they will turn around by themselves.

I think that if u look at their record over the last couple of years it is absolutely appallling away from home but at home it is actually pretty good, I'm not saying I know what the answer to this is but i'm pretty sure they're capable of wiining Tests at home. The England A side played in the Busta Cup competition this winter & so we got to follow what was going on in their cricket & I think that a bit of an upturn is round the corner BUT their biggest problem is that all the pitches are low & slow which doesn't encourage fast bowling or stroke play whcih r the 2 major factors of their cricket over the years-the amazing thing was that most of the highest wicket takers were spinners (& leggies at that)I think if they started producing a few quick tracks it might encourage a resurgance in genuine quick bowling in the carribean rather than the muppets that have been bowling for them recently.
