As an unbiased outsider , and not knowing your list intimately, you had the look today of a club that’s had Ayres in charge for 5 years. Like a vampire he loves to suck the life blood out of a list,"I want mature bodies". “rebuilding, that’s for the next guy". A couple of years ago I envied your midfield, you had a nice hard group of players like Roo, Johnson, Goodwin etc complemented by McLeod and ours were young and getting kicked around by Brisbane and Port. Now your midfield looks to have lost its strength, they are either injured or have lost pace or are not interested.
We are now starting see the results of drafting theses kids and playing them. Experience and time does wonders, not that we had a choice after Ayres LEFT us with a year left of his contract. A blessing actually. We had been topped up with good ordinary footballers too long and had no real fresh talent apparent. Thompson was forced to draft likely types and spend time to develop them. We, unlike you guys have struggled to pull a big name. We have been lucky with some players like Ablett and Scarlett, Father/Sons like that are a blessing from God but a guy like Moloney was overlooked by every other club, taken as a 4th or 5th choice in a pre season draft. Recent additions like Tenace shows what I’m talking about. We would have traded our pick 7 that got Tenace for Jade Rawlings(thank God he didn’t want to come)What did Carey cost you again?Tenace is going to be a star, with only 5 games he is already starting to give the much need speed, skill and flair that Cat supporters expect. (To win is good, to win with style is always better!)
Its taken five years to get our midfield back to a reasonable quality and it’ll take another 2-3 to get our forward line to back to being dangerous but we are progressing, and who’s to say what our backline will be like once our forwardline is good again, but that’s rebuilding Frustrating and time consuming.
Topping up is tempting because you feel you might get results quicker but in reality guys like Carey have cost you big time My only comment to you guys is to put pressure on the club to get the best young kids from SA into your side. Did the Crows try to do a deal for Cooney last year? Well if you didn’t , you certainly should be going flat out at the end of next year. Due to the current draft rules grabbing those early picks is the only way to grab best local kids. My personal preference has always been that the best talent should go to their local side/club , just like I think we should have dibs on the best talented Geelong Area Juniors, each club should get 1 pick from their local area. Football was developed on tribalism, it should remain that way. Back to reality. What ever talents coming up in your Teal cup side you must do your best to top up with it. Trade if you have to get an extra picks in the Top10, even if you go backwards for a year or 2 its worth it, believe me. I’ve been watching mediocrity for close to a decade and its not pleasant.
Give Topping up and Ayres the flick. Draft the cream of SA youth, not the smelly old Cheese from whereever. Do it now before guys like Roo are gone cause it’s a lot harder and a lot more painful with just kids in your side !!!

Thanks for the post overall.

Time for Adelaide to bite the bullet as you've suggested

Turbocat...talk about exaggeration and bluster.

Two different clubs, two different lists.

Ayres is playing a lot of kids this year - to his credit.

He did a great job hardening up our list and doing a mini-rebuild after the final Blight year.

His only failing is his matchday coaching.

no offence, but I think that Geelong supporters need to understand that they're not exactly setting the world on fire with two wins from six games before they start talking about how great their kids are.

This wasn’t meant to bag you or kick when you are down etc.
Geelong has got nothing to brag about .Forgive my enthusiasm for Tenace its probably pre-emptive but I do hold a high opinion of him. Generally as I think I said our mid field is only a “Reasonable quality”.

The whole gist of my comment was a just hopefully a friendly, unbiased comment from a fellow AFL supporter who supports another club. Nothing on the line one way or the other. I have no grip with the Crows, I don’t wish them ill or un paralleled success. I know the Cats list isn’t Great in fact it will struggle to be good most of the year. We will struggle to win almost every game and if the effort drops we will lose. Struggling every week to win is the lot of ordinary team not a great one but from the effort today, and that’s what I’m judging on, I think you might struggle too. Maybe its just form, maybe it was our home ground, maybe it was the wind, maybe you have heaps of future champs on the list.( I would have liked to have a look at Watts) , maybe everyone in SA thinks Ayres it tops, maybe or maybe it something else

Ayres did at Geelong what he had to do, and left before he could start blooding new players.
He also came to Adelaide with a job to do.

Now that everybody has realised that the "premiership with the current team" dream has finished, he has started recruiting and blooding new players, and some of them are quite exciting. This is something he didn't get to do at Geelong so direct comparisons cannot be made.

Geelong has recruited better since Ayres left? I should hope so given the picks available and the direction that the Board etc have taken.
How many new "champions" have Matthews or Sheedy discovered? What picks have they had? (Headland and Brennan can be included in this)
If Geelong thought that they were one or two players short of a premiership would Thompson be allowed to draft for the future with all of his picks? The answer is a big NO.

IMO just wait and see what Ayres has achieved by the end of this year, or better still by the end of next, before stating anything about his recruiting ability. Carey was the only "real" forward available at the time and Burns came cheap.
The only thing that can be said about Ayres so far is that he has been in charge of two apparently decent teams and not delivered the big one.
The big question there is did he overachieve or underachieve with those teams?
From what I can tell he underachieved in the eyes of most of his own supporters (both teams), and overachieved in the eyes of most others.

I could be inclined to give Gary at least 1 more year to rebuild a squad capable of being regular finalists in years to come, trouble is i just can't get overly excited in the list of young hopefuls that have been produced so far in the last couple of years.

Plus every time i see young Kane Cornes put in a performance like he done yesterday it makes my blood boil & i curse Ayresy & his sidekick something shocking for going against all advice in drafting Angwin instead of K Cornes.

With 20/20 that seems to have been a real bad one, but I'll see your Angwin with Michael Stevens and raise you a (pick one of several here). :)

Every weekend these days I thank the AFL for ****ing around with the father/son rule for years before they brought it in for SANFL players. A Cornes in the crow colours would make me sick! ;)
