Surely the (other) powers that be at the AFL either stop this guy doing media interviews or give him a fair bit of extra training on public speaking.

He is so unsure of himself when he speaks. Struggles to sell decisions made under his leadership and quite often second guesses himself mid-sentence. Not to mention the amount of umms and ahhhs….
Gillon oozed confidence. As you say, Dillon comes across as hesitant, although I'm sure that behind the scenes he is probably different. The public persona is not impressive. Even growing his hair long to copy Gillon doesn't fool me!

I reckon he is just keeping the seat warm for Tom Harley, although the handling of the recent Bondi attack tribute speech has left a sour taste. I am not convinced Pavlich is not the convenient fall-guy for the AFL once again dabbling in politics.

Has the AFL ever got more things wrong than since he took over? He is completely tone deaf, doesn't give a shit about what the fans want and is in over his head.

This is what happens when you give jobs for the boys, rather than the best candidate (B Gale). **** me the moron even appointed Laura Kane as a diversity hire only to demote her shortly after cos she has no idea.

The dumb bastards don't look further than the corridor @ AFL house for candidates.

Agree. Gale always comes across as measured, honest and likeable.

The fixture disaster surely must be the final nail in the coffin of Dilz.. 40% of the rounds compromised by byes.. Crowds down, ratings down is a disaster for a league reliant on a huge pay day coming from broadcast rights.

Imagine what a pig's breakfast it will become with a 19th team.

In an era where there are more ‘journalists’ than players. When a player sneezes without covering their mouth, it’s a headline. Or a former ‘WAG’ sells her house, it’s a headline. It just goes to show how conflicted the industry is when the only person speaking about this issue is a journalist (and a very good one at that) from The Guardian who actually has some rigor.

Everyone has fingers in the pie. Be quiet.

I have referred to him as an empty suit, but that is an unfair misuse of the term. Because empty suits are at least supposed to project superficial authority and competence.

This bloke is exactly as impressive as he seems.

He's like AI slop dressed in a cheap suit - just zero passion or authenticity.

I think this is a bit harsh, they may not have specifically highlighted his public speaking but I don’t think you can accuse mainstream journos of going easy on him or how he presents.

Did you like that article? Think my favourite piece of well-researched writing was his line that "Dillon will never be that type of leader. He’ll never be someone who can go on a show like The Front Bar and banter with comedians", when Dillon did exactly that last week.

Just another opinion piece.

When he was appointed, I thought at the very least that a guy who had played almost 300 games of ammo footy would see him as a grass roots footy type who would know what the average supporter wants and that he would do the rights things for the game (and its loyal supporters).

How wrong I was.

He has turned out to be a massive disappointment in the role.

From the moment he was appointed, his role was to find ways to make more money for the AFL. Anyone who thinks the role of CEO of the AFL is to create a fair and equitable elite competition, or to create healthy environments for football at grass roots level are living in the 1980s.

I don't like it either, but that's footy reality in the 21st century.

Yeah terrible public speaker - you would think they would give him some media training

But then you come to Matt Canavan ( not being political at all ) youd reckon someone would tell him to keep his blooody hands still when he talks , every word he utters there is these massive hand gestures , talk about off putting

Why don't these corporate/political leadership types understand that people will be far more tolerant and accepting if they are just honest about mistakes and controversies?

"Yes we got this adjustment to the rules wrong and we need to tweak it, yes this political thing we tried to do completely missed the mark and we're sorry for it, yes we admit we haven't done enough to stamp this problem out of the AFL"

The public will accept this so much better than

"This bad thing we did was actually a really good thing, this thing everyone is complaining about never reached our ears, this controversial polarising change is shown to be really really popular".
