It's no secret I'm no Gaff fan but I can clearly remember more frustration with Mainy, he bombed long into the forward line all day long and didn't have the precision Gaff has with his left foot. Mainy was a faster runner but didn't have anywhere near the tank Gaff has with us now. As for who takes the CLub Champion of all time spot only Mainy because he has premierships to his name.
Wasnt that he didnt have the tank - was more to do with him being out on the “piss” till 3 am. I used to work at aqua and the amount of times you would see him in there on game day... morning

I don't think he's near the top 5 personally. Judd, Cousins, Kerr, Matera, Kemp is pretty set for me at this stage barring some real high end seasons from either shuey or gaff. I see gaff as leading the pack of guys after those 5.
Yeah any of those 5 would be close to being the best midfielder in todays game no problem. Incredible players and good luck seperating them. The sheer willpower and skill of Ben the last man standing Cousins. Explosiveness of Judd. Kerr the terrier, the ultimate extractor and Kemp just a beautiful all round exponent, pure silk.

If pushed I'm going Matera though simply because he was the best to watch imo. Evasiveness in tight and then the explosive speed from congestion. Time and again a thing of beauty as he lit up the wide spaces of Subi. He was also a tackling machine and deadly around goals crowning his career with a legendary 5 goals in a gf from a wing. Should have 3 Brownlows, AFL legend status and a statue at Optus stadium.

Cousins would be a close second in my opinion - loved his evasiveness. Re Kerr will always remember the day he tackled Gehrig from the Saints just near the boundary line and the tackle stuck, and from memory Gehrig was penalised for holding the ball. It was a sight to see taking the difference of their size into consideration.:)

It's an interesting question and one I'm not leaning strongly either way on, though I do agree that if Gaff carries on and keeps up his level of play I'll be giving him the nod.
But I really just wanted to say it's extremely unfair to take a past champ and judge him based on the way the game is played today while also assuming he would have just stubbornly refused to adapt in any way.

In the 1992/1994 era Matera played on one wing and Mainwaring on the other and Embley mainly played as a HFF at that time - he may have played on a wing later on in his career once Matera and/or Mainwaring were either out injured or retired. Embley also spent the odd game on the HBF.
Embley was drafted in 1998
Mainwaring retired in 1999
Matera retired in 2002

Younger mainy was an absolute gun.

Gaff more consistent over a longer period.

Injuries ruined mainy. That's when he started throwing it on the boot.

Hard to compare... Mainy probably played better games but gaff is Mr reliable

First thing I thought as soon as I saw the thread title was "Stupid question, Mainwaring of course". But the more I think about it, that's definitely a nostalgic view. Gaff is the better of the two.

Can just remember Embley in his early career taking clutch marks in the forward line but do know he played on the wing later. He also got suspended a couple of times for being a bit too aggressive when he was playing forward but that's another story. So Embley got drafted only the year before Mainy retired so therefore no doubt took over the wing position after that. Yes can remember that Embley didn't come in until later but just wasn't sure when both Mainy & Matera retired. :thumbsu:

From my recollection can remember thinking Mainy made many errors when kicking but he definitely knew how to find the ball and his courage was never in doubt. At the time when he got injured which wrecked his career can remember hearing his knee was like he had been in a major car accident. He came back with a mattress on his leg to play his 200th (?) but think he pulled the pin after that.
Hard to compare him with Gaff as played in very different eras. Lets just say they both were and in Gaffs case are champions of the game. All Gaff now needs is to re-sign with the Eagles and to get a couple of GF medallions to hang around his neck over the next couple of years.:)

****in hell, every time I open BF and see this thread I think it’s an announcement that Gaff has re-signed.

You know what annoys me more. IS every week Gaff runs certain amount of K's in a game WC post an update with Gaff and it always looks like a re-signing article on their website.

Isn't there some sort of foodbank thing tied up with Gaffy's km run this season? Probably why there is an update...

Until Gaff fends off an Essendon player by pushing his face away and then bombing the goal from 50 its Mainwaring because I remember that moment and it was great.

Or Mainy's floating snap that somehow went through in the 2nd Semi in '92

Now I'm all nostalgic thanks a lot BF.
