Opinion Andrew Gaff or Chris Mainwaring?

Certainly Gaff for our current gameplan. Mainwaring played more exciting football, but it was pretty unsophisticated - beat your opponent, burn him off, hoof it forward. The intercept marking defences of today would have eaten it up.

Matera in another class altogether.

Agree...Mainy used to bomb it a lot, bit of a battering ram. Chalk and cheese really, different times.
Gaff has more finesse on both legs. Doesn't burn the midnight oil either.
Matera, wow, love to see a goalkicking wingman again...on the run if you don't mind.
Embers had a bit of that, but not the same league. Yeo has too.

He was not a superstar. Doesn’t detract from fact he was an excellent player though.

My memory of mainwaring is just getting it forward and the fight. He is a much tougher player than gaff but gaff is much more polished with a much better running capacity. I’d take gaff personally.

I reckon Gaff has just pushed ahead of Mainy. Both fantastic players. Both really suited to their eras.

Think I would take Gaff personally, although I suspect that would be a minority view. Gaff has better disposal for mine, I always thought Mainwaring tended to just pump it forward a bit to much.

Despite both being wingers - they had very different game styles

Mainwaring was the courageous, rock solid winger who allowed matera to attack - he lacked polish, but he had guts. He was a more skilful McGinnity and quite good overhead

I’d probably take gaff as the better player - but it really would depend on what role you wanted
