Doubt we would trade for him. If you match our offer you likely keep him.

Yep, he stays.

The whole "force a trade" thing is just fanboy stuff.

Gaff can still decline to take a WC contract and go to the PSD, which whilst very unlikely, has actually occurred before.

If we match a FA offer for gaff can the destination club just pull their offer knowing they wont get him for free ?

If a club pulled an offer that would then ward off any potential FAs in the future .

What happens then ? Gaff will stay or entertain offers from other clubs not as a free agent .
"Hey Andrew. We want to offer you this contract to play with us, but in the event West Coast match it, we won't be aiming to make a trade as our resources are tied up.
If you think you would consider the offer let us know, otherwise best of luck"

Possible outcomes
-WC don't match, Gaff moves on and gets paid
-WC match, Gaff gets paid
-Gaff says no thanks, moves on to next offer

Not sure how any of that is a consideration to other free agents.

Big news this morning is that eagles have come to a decision that they will match any offer for gaff.

It is from a journo that is prone to getting it wrong but he was extra sure today.
not sure how matching an offer works.
is it the exact offer? including front loading?
im not sure the eagles could match 2mil for the first year.....
if they only have to pay the same total money and the same total years this seems more of a possibility.
i guess if Melbourne are offering 800k per year as rumoured the wc would totally match.
If wc were matching the Victorian offers currently wouldnt he just stay?
its funny i think if gaff chose north wc wouldnt match as wouldnt have the cap space. But. North seem to have more the eagles would like imo.
north would be willing to trade its number 1 ruck. Melbourne there is no chance.
ruck seems to be a current need for the eagles.
any way thats my 2c.

I doubt he met Worsfold for a potential move reckon it was just a catch up while he was in Melbourne after the events of last week.
Possibly correct as that would be the sort of thing that Woosha would do, as possibly was concerned for Gaff after the previous weeks events. Different circumstances of course, but I believe Woosh also reached out to Cousins following all his misdemeanours back when.

I'd say he's already decided where he's going.....And it won't be North, that's for sure.
The fact that there are a few confident it might happen makes me think it wont.

But i dont think we are out of the race at all.

What makes you so sure?

Some rumours around that he's made up his mind and that it is North.

If you consider Gaff one of the best mids in the comp then why not pay him a wage deserving of such status?

Pretty sure we have offered that.

Clubs who want to pull a player out always pay above market rates unless the players needs / wants to move states for non football reasons.

Interesting comment from Robbo....

WHO WOULD YOU RATHER BE, CHRIS OR BRAD SCOTT?

Mark Robinson: Brad because he’s a big chance to coach Polec, Gaff and Josh Kelly within 18 months.

The North offer is big and very unlikely Eagles could match, would be a huge bluff because Eagles would damage themselves long term.
All other offers though are likely to be matched without issue.

Quality post as normal.

As much substance as baby poo

What sort of answer is that?

If he seriously wants to come home then he'll come home. That will be the end of it.

I can understand your angst, but that is footy in the year 2018. There's no point putting your head in the sand about it.

Stop all this procrastination and tell us where he's going then!!

I had mail from a previously reliable source, but that was prior to the Brayshaw incident, and who knows how that might affect anything?

It's a shitty way to leave a club. My guess is that he hasn't conclusively decided.

Your guess is as good as mine....Most pundits have him returning to Melbourne....If last year is any guide, then it won't be North.

I mean, why would you leave a big club that plays finals regularly for a middle of the road minnow?;)

Gaff - ' ok no thanks their are 5 other clubs that want me and get me too their club no matter what '

We only have to match total $ and years . No matter how it is structured

I have a feeling WCE will match almost any offer except a crazy buddy like offer.

Wce were filthy about the selwood compo we recieved a few years back when the afl were cracking down on compo . Brizzy were aslo filthy about Leuenberger compo that year . Afl has since changed compo to suit them selves since then .

Pretty sure a club matching does so with same years same total but has flexibility to shuffle the payment timing around. So a $2m first year doesnt need to be matched in timing but the total contract term and value must be the same at the end of the day.

What sort of answer is 'well it may have to be tenable'.

Its a nothing statement.

At this stage I think Gaff is more lukely to leave as is Lycett. Gaff for lifestyle and Lycett for a longer deal with greater security.

We would like both to stay and the fa compo for Lycett would be bearable .....just.

But if both nominated to go we then have a huge amount if cap space. We could easily match the Gaff offer and ensure any move we are fairly compensated.

Its not about blocking Gaff returning to Melbourne its about exercising the clubs right in a rfa negotiation. If Gaff agrees to be traded the club will act in good faith to get him where he wants to go.

In the mean time we have a top two berth to sew up and finals to play.

Once all is done on field we will get to sorting things out, maybe sooner.

And if he doesn't want to stay in W/A then you risk losing him for nothing.....Seldom if ever has another club chose to match an offer because of the pressures of free agency.
