They 100% would if they knew that West Coast have no intentions to pay the contract.

Lets say WC are offering 800k over 6 and he is offered 1.1 over 7. Clubs can't just go matching that offer just because they aren't happy with what they'll get as compensation. If the player and player manager know what is being offered and all of a sudden WC matched only to make it harder for Gaff to move, there would be a shit storm. It would defeat the purpose of FA.

Liam Pickering has spoken about it a few times and suggests there would be a huge uproar from the AFLPA as well as the AFL in particular and clubs.

If they have intentions of paying $1.1 a year then fair enough, but if that's the case I suggest Gaff would stay.

Matching the deal runs the risk of the player saying: "finally, got that extra $300,000 a year and the extra year I wanted all along - I'll take it" and signs but I don't ever expect it to happen except as a political point because all parties know what the deals offered are and what they are competing with to sign the player.

Cutting out an entire round of negotiation is silly.

Clubs who match risk the player staying. But clubs will generally only match if they are happy with the player staying for that reason.

In the case of Gaff, the eagles would have two questions to consider:
- would we get more via trade?
- would we be ok if he accepted our matched offer?

If the answer to both is yes then they match. Given that the answer to the first question is obviously yes, it all comes down to us being ok paying the same as what the other club has tabled.

At a team like Hawthorn he would be perfect where he can just be used as the guy get it up the field while Jaegar and Titch get it to him. Heck even Geelong would be sexy for him. Has improved a little this year in terms of contested footy but still, never see him win his own ball and quite more often than not is happy to not be the one tackling when he is first there. In saying that he is still an elite running midfield and would line up in a lot of teams. Just feel he is a bit overrated and if Eagles were to straight trade Gaff for a Tom Phillips from Collingwood then I feel like he wouldn’t we losing out on much. I’d everyday of the week take Shuey over him (especially last years Shuey) and the Yeo Yeo. Gaff really is the third best midfielder at our club.

Gaff is our best performed midfielder this season,would leave a huge hole in our team.masten would be our only outside runner

I’ve got him in my Fantasy team and being in the top 1000, I follow it quite a lot, Gaff being my only Eagle until this week, id say I’d follow Gaff more than every eagle. Hahaha **** that sounds lame but seriously you follow players like a hawk when you have them in your fantasy team.

I’m not saying he’s not good , I’m just saying there is a reason why despite getting 30+ touches every week he rarely gets tagged anymore.
Maybe because there’s no taggers anymore but Ben Jacobs barely touched a finger on Gaff all game last week, and with no Shuey you think Gaff would’ve been the perfect option.

Can anyone find it better than Gaff? No, he is by far our hardest running midfielder, probably haven’t had one like Gaff since Cousins and Kerr. However, very one footed, not a contested ball winner (you can say he is doing better this year but how could he of gotten any worse after what he has showed us in his career) and rarely tackles. Now I know players just can’t do everything but Shuey is beautiful on both feet, is both a contested and uncontested player, and his 2017 was just a gem. The leadership he brought was bullshit good and stood up in like our last 8 games of the season.

We would have no outside players if Gaff left (only having Masten makes me want to chop my dick off) but it would be a price I’m willing to pay instead of overpaying Gaff when we would get a sexy return. That’s of course if he wants to leave. If he wants to stay I’m not going to say no.

Out of his 538 possessions, 156 of them are contested (and you’re bound to get some when you get so many touches), just over 20%, and id assume a lot of them are just handballs in a conjested area and/or when he is getting tackled. Fair enough it’s still a contested possesion and it’s Bette than before but like I said before, how could of it been any worse. Seriously go watch any match from not this year and he would’ve been the weakest player in the AFL, definitely would’ve been the weakest midfielder. I wonder how many of them are actually getting your own ball, like Yeo does, like Shuey and Redden do. He isn’t one of those players but I’m not going sit here and say he is even decent at the contested ball now. Masten wins harder balls than him. Again, not being a contested ball winner doesn’t make him not great, but I’m picking Yeo and Shuey 100 times out of 100 over Gaff and I think they should get paid more than Gaff, which won’t happen after he gets his contract. and for that I think losing Gaff wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to the Eagles this year. Need Lycett and McGovern over him. Midfielders ‘lot easier to find as well.

North Melbourne I was thinking would be the best team for him, but just have a bad feeling it maybe a little too “small market” for him. Like maybe the bigger clubs make more appeal. However that is just speculation and is based more off of NBA trends than AFL. But in terms of fit, North Melbourne and Hawthorn would be his best, with North Melbourne being ideal. Teams have to make a decision on if they want to tag Higgins or not as well.

I reckon thats a fair deal. Fritsch is worth a second rounder, we get 31 and 44. Gaff alone is worth a top 10 pick. Your last point is absolutely on the money, if they want Gaff they will know we will dig in for a fair deal.
