Liked Roberts Walls description of him a couple of weeks ago that despite some deficiencies in decision making he seems like a player who just naturally seems to be able to run to get free and run to the right spots. Said he has watched him closely and he runs the 'angles' very cleverly to get to good, attacking positions.

On another note, the unwashed masses seem to enjoy sinking the boot into Ratts when things don't work out but his faith in his young players is second to none.

Can't let that go
You have to be kidding, thread laments his lack of opportunity, the sub and being dropped. What opportunities has Grigg had in that period? Watson had to wait for a game when pre season form at least matched Bower's. Walker had to fight almost beg for a chance up forward. Henderson became a defender as last man standing. My god Ratts shows faith in the young players.
So many are so blinkered.
Collins, McLean, Watson coming on despite the coach.

Similar style to Gibbs who thinks his way through a game to find the ball and space in a game.

Was unhappy with the trade, not that Grigg gave us much choice but always thought he'd be a player. Didn't think Collins was AFL standard after his first few games this year, might have to backtrack on that one. But he needs to do it consistently and against better opposition - lets be honest, the bulldogs are pretty stinky atm. Good signs though in his last few games

Fantastic game from Collins. Smooth mover with an eye for the goals. That blind turn out of the pack in defence was hilarious.

That was ridiculous, had to rewind it to make sure it was him! :D

For anyone that has really followed Collins since he came to Carlton, not much has really changed.
Andrew is clearly a footballer with skills that should hold him in good stead in the best of company, yet at times he just seems somewhat unsure about himself.

I just get the feeling that he can be his own worst enemy at times and may just need a good pat on the back and allowed to back himself at all cost.
That's all easier said than done, but for now it just seems a fine line between Collins becoming a player that can elevate himself to a higher status or one that could just as easily fall back into becoming an also-ran.

That may seem somewhat harsh on the back of recent efforts, but the ceiling is high for Collins.
His best years are in front of him, yet it just seems to me that more than most players, he just needs the full backing of his coaches and team-mates to reach his peak in this game.

He's clearly not going anywhere at the end of this year, so he may just have time on his side.
Good for you Andrew. :thumbsu:
Great summing up of Andy. Even on Saturday he showed both sides of his scope. Did some brilliant things when he got his confidence but earlier on looked very hesitant/nervous. Lets hope he finds the confidence needed to really step up consistently.

Thing is he actually has more class and talent and ultimately, IMO, probably a higher ceiling than I originally thought he had.

He may never be a huge star or anything, but I think he's better than some of the Tiger supporters tried to make out he was. He has something about him that sets him apart from your usual honest trier I think.

Yeah you probably should've let it go..
Watson and Collins both struggled early on in the VFL. McLean didn't have a spot early on due to good form of others in the seniors, not to mention that he isn't young. Bower got a game ahead of Watson due to being able to play more roles in the side (3rd tall/rebounding defender).
Henderson was playing as a defender prior to crossing to Carlton, we tried him up forward to fill a void up there.
As for Grigg, he has no relevance to this conversation, of course he's going to get more game time in a lesser midfield.
The fact that you claim that Ratts doesn't give our younger blokes a crack leads me to believe that you don't actually watch many Carlton games.
Take Bootsma for example, he wasn't expected to play at all this season has been given a couple of games to taste seniors. Not to mention McInnes getting a game ahead of a solid older player in Thornton.
You're right, sadly, you like many others are blinkered.

Such is the life of a young player at a finals side. Richmond have had the luxury to throw the side around and see who could play as most of their recent seasons have had premature ends and form has necessitated changes.

It is why Laidler is now at Carlton, Mumford sought opportunities at Sydney, Kennedy and McGlynn also jetted to Sydney. They just had a higher quality core group at Geelong and getting in was very difficult.

Which is exactly the reason Grigg left Carlton. Lets be honest, he wasn't getting a regular game and needed to get regular game time at AFL level to improve. He has improved but only because he's had a great deal more game time at Richmond because he moved to weaker list, he's actually had to shoulder more load than he would have at Carlton. The Collins / Grigg trade will be good for both clubs you swapped a player with some good qualities to build on, we swapped a player with some good qualities to build on. Hope Andy keeps playing well and has a long career and I hope he plays well enough Saturday night (not to well :P) to keep the positives coming.

I was watching a game from years ago when richmond were playing fremantle in perth and collins was getting a bit and Walls was raving on about him. Wallsy is a big fan and has been for a while I recon. But he is right, Collins just runs to the right places and finds space so well. If he just gets over the nervousness he gets when he gets the ball he will be even better. He will which I am sure of.

I do find it funny how we find Collins similar to Houlihan. Houlihan was a better kick and better at kicking a "weighted" kick where as collins is harder and more intense at the ball, a better tackler and possibly a better mark and perhaps a tad quicker. However they do play the same position and find the ball in similar fashion.

Rumour AC turned water into Gatorade post game.

He plays the way I'd always hoped Jordan Russell would play. Attacking, bullocking, finding space, trying the extraordinary at times. JR seems to have all these attributes, but doesn't believe he has them.
JR was like that two years ago, but has obviously lost his mojo and confidence. Possibly due to injuries.

Big game for Andy. Got something to prove to his team, his club, his old team, his old club, and 80,000 screaming heads. Have a feeling we will see something special from AC on Saturday night. Go get em son.

Good luck to Andy. He's a top bloke.

Funny the MCG are only predicting 50,000. I reckon 80k is a bit high.

I think you have the predicted attendance numbers about right. If both teams were in the 8, the crowd would have been 70k+.

Both teams in the 8 would attract 80k + IMO.

He's always been super classy and talented, but held back by his injuries and his inability to put any weight on. Still a massive fan.
