why is there a thread for seemingly every unsigned misfit on our board ?

im sure jon ralph is an alias here somewhere......"pies fans support recruiting blah blah"

lovett, fevola, dawson - there was never a chance in hell any one of them were ever ever ever gonna be signed by us, considering our current position, list, sponsors etc etc.

lovett was massively overrated by the aints when pick 8 was used to recruit him - i rated him a 3rd round pick at best due to the many issues he had before the bad stories surfaced.

Thanks for YOUR thoughts doesnt make you right though? people are entitled to their opinions just like you... picking him up as a rookies as well as Fev will give the Pies time to assess how they act/perform during the year... doesnt mean they'll get a game... and if someone does get injured i.e Cloke then Fev or Lovett (if a couple of mids go down) come in... all about covering your bets... thats how it rolls...if nothing changes throughtout the year... DROP them ...goodbye no harm done...

A valid question being asked is why such a blanket no for Lovett when we just last year selected a similarly mature aged, talented & troubled Krakouer.
Not similarly troubled in the sense that tehre troubles were similar but that aside had Lovett had the year Krakouer did in the WAFL and played a GF like Krakouer did he would be in a lot more demand.

I guess the possible harm is if they do stuff that undermines the tight bonds that currently exists at the club..unlikely but definitely possible.

But the main harm surely is that they've occupied two spots that could have been given to say Sundberg or Eddy or some other two young up and comers who may go on to play very successfully ( though I do get the notion the window's open now so let's load up...but still there has to be balance re the future of the club also)

Separately- re the risk of bringing the club into disrepute though that others may argue...I doubt that would happen to a huge extent... given their history it would be more that they stuffed up again personally moreso than the club stuffed up, but there would be some fallout.

eg Lovett damaged St Kilda even though he hadn't even pulled on the guernsey.

Krakouer screwed up big time once and paid the price, but was always committed as a footballer. Lovett on the other hand screwed up numerous times and wasn't committed to his football, and has shown nothing in the last 2 years to make a club want to sign him. If Lovett had been a standout in the WAFL or whatever then clubs would show some interest, really the only mention he's ever got was when he was in the papers this week saying he'd like to be given another chance.

I think from an offield point of view Lovett should be given another go to redeem himself. I think too much weight has been attached to his past issues. It all depends on his current state of mind & attitude, the past is the past.

From an on field point of view there is no doubt he has or at least had the speed & skills to impact AFL footy. If we thought we could extract this from him consistently his recruitment would be a no brainer.

However, the problem is that he has not really performed that well since leaving AFL. This is the major difference between him & Krakouer. Krak went back to WAFL and played out of his skin, this demonstrated he had lost nothing and even improved as a player. That makes it impossible for recruiter to ignore.

Lovett needed to go to a VFL or WAFL club and do something similar. As he didn't it makes it hard for recruiters to think that he is the same player or better than he was. Too much of a risk. I give Fev some kudos for the way he has approached his comeback - there is not really a question over his ability because he showed he can still perform at a high level so it will come down to his age & offield behaviour, but at least he corrected the one thing he could influence.

The other major difference is that Krak never had behavioural issues while he was at Richmond. He had one bad event that resulted in him doing time, he came out and worked his butt off.

Lovett has a history of "issues" well before the Rape charge he was acquitted of.

So, lets look at what Lovett brings to the table.

  • He has a history of behavioural issues.
  • At his best he was quite good, but was inconsistent and the gap between his best and his worst was very large.
  • He hasn't played AFL for 2 years.
  • His exposed form in the lower levels that he has played at is average at best.
  • He's 29 or 30 years old.
  • At his best, he doesn't offer anything we don't already have.
