Nice debut. Just the 9 touches but went at 89% and looked pretty composed in doing so for a 1st gamer. Didn’t look hurried at all which is a very positive sign

I only saw the second half, but I was very unimpressed by his lack of effort in failing to pressure an opponent receiving the ball on the boundary, resulting in a goal. This was not missed by Dermie who criticised him for it. His lazy approach looked as though it had been absorbed from watching the team in previous weeks.

Could be a tank issue, could just be a kid in his first game making one mistake.

He'll learn from it, regardless.

Been watchinh Matt Crouch or Rory Laird. They do that all the time, and it annoys the s**t out if me.

Pressure the bloke with the ball FFS!

Yes, that was unacceptable and it’s efforts like that why we are bottom.

He showed enough good signs, but give me a desperate Kelly, or Murphy, type over a lazy McPherson or Stengle type any day - especially in a struggling side.

Hopefully that doesn’t happen again.

75% efficiency on his kicks, which is the sort of rate you want your better ball users going at. Most of ours go at around 65%, other than guys like Kelly who keep theirs high by not attempting anything too difficult. Brodie Smith goes at 74.6% and is one of the few on our team who can pull off tough kicks, if we can get McPherson hitting the same then that's a big asset.

I don’t know if it’s the same instance, but I also noticed him jogging when a despairing lunge could have put a little bit of pressure in his opponent.

Personally I’ve got zero tolerance for this stuff. We have a culture problem. Give me a gut busting Murphy over a cruising Gibbs any day.

But there also were some very promising signs. Don’t want to smash his confidence by dropping him over a couple of errors. Maybe some caution, still not full confidence in his body.

Interesting juggling act.

I don't know if having a gut-busting murphy or cruising Gibbs does anything for our culture.

Culture like this is built from the best players in the 22, and how much slack they're getting. Not the players who are on the periphery.

Agreed. I'm not sure you want an all-effort no-skill player like Murphy either, that culture has given us the wonderful service of Mackay, Kelly, etc.

I think the best approach is selecting based on talent/skills/football ability and then effort seals the deal

I would agree with that, unless you're needing something rather specialised, aim for talent/football ability and then reward effort. After all, it does not matter how much effort a Murphy type puts in to our culture if a Matt Crouch survives a game where he has more turnovers then a combined amount of tackles, intercepts and 1%.

I hope you didn’t read my comment to be an all purpose endorsement of our current selection policy.

I didn't, I'm just saying that its irrelevant to prioritise someone like a Murphy over someone with more talent in McPherson as a cultural selection because you will not get the cultural effect you're after.

Not sure if you are right about that. I don’t really rate Stengle that much but he’s definitely having a crack defensively this year, maybe getting overlooked for Murphy for a while helped that to happen?

Don't get me wrong, if our coaches are showing even a hint of competency, they'll be trying to work on the defensive aspect of nearly every player. Especially one as flawed as Stengle.

That said, culture is defined by the top. You can't preach about the need for team defence, and everyone pulling their weight if a leadership group member like Matt Crouch survives a week where frankly, he didn't, or couldn't put in (as stated - he had more turnovers then the combined value of every basic defensive metric against west coast). Same deal for Sloane, Smith, Talia, Tex, Brad Crouch etc when they've slacked off.

I like that McPherson seems to have a better blend of offence and defence in his game then most his size. And an AFL ready body.

Just a well rounded player really. Seems like a natural replacement for Kelly who has his strengths, but also is painfully slow and lateral with his ball movement.

Thanks for your help Bull, but over to you Moose

It's OK to criticise MCrouch, Laird, etc., for jogging, but not a debutant?

I'm not suggesting he be dropped, or writing him off: indeed, I didn't even see the first half. However, this particular characteristic is unacceptable and the coach should be pointing it out and getting it fixed immediately, rather than sweeping it under the carpet, n'est ce pas?

Yeah you should've stopped after your first sentence.

Not only is it ok, it's required. Matt Crouch and Laird are the leaders of this club, the experienced players, the ones who set and drive standards. If they're jogging continuously, we are screwed because inevitably it'll get imbed into the next generation as behaviour that will not threaten their spot in the side.

Someone like McPherson jogging, and it's up to the club to internally fix it, but its nowhere near the hangable offence as the previous two. He is a kid after all and is not expected, or in a position to drive standards.
