BRISBANE midfielder Andrew Raines says there is far too much scrutiny of modern-day football for players to delve into the darker arts of tagging.
The role of the tagger, defensive midfielder or "run-with" player has been thrust into the spotlight this week following a TV interview with recently retired St Kilda star Steven Baker.
"I think the days of sharpening the boots and those sorts of things are gone. The umpires are always looking at you so you definitely stay away from that sort of thing," Raines said.
"You've got to be aggressive and passionate (when you are a tagger). That's the way I play my football but you do still have to stay within the rules."

The 26-year-old joined Brisbane at the end of 2009 after playing 56 games with Richmond and has re-invented himself as one of the competition's better defensive midfielders in the past 12 months.
Raines has held his own against the likes of Gary Ablett and Joel Selwood in 2012 and is looking to claim more superstar scalps as a long-term Lion.
"I'm currently in negotiations at the moment so hopefully will put pen to paper shortly. I love this club and enjoy being back up in the warm climate," Raines said.
He is also relishing his tagging role which he suggested to Brisbane coach Michael Voss.
I like how he carefully walks right up to that line without crossing it (much).
Considering Boak had a great game I'd say it was Raines' worst tagging effort for the year. But good on him for having a big last quarter.
He's even bagging the odd goal or two.
I agree. He has had the sort of consistent year that will see him accumulate votes nicely.Kicked one in the last three weeks. Should do quite well in the B&F - top 10, possibly top 5.
