Just on the Sun website that he may go into the draft and (suprise, suprise) apparently the Pies are keen if (when) we don't get Ball. Would you take him? I would, I really rate him.

ESSENDON is yet to re-sign experienced leaders Andrew Welsh and Adam McPhee a month after losing skipper Matthew Lloyd to retirement.

Both Welsh and McPhee are known to be disappointed at the length of the contracts put to them by the club.

Essendon has offered two-year deals, but Welsh and McPhee view the negotiations as the most important of their careers and have been pushing for three years.

The Bombers were prepared to offer a three-year contract to Mark Williams to lure him from Hawthorn during the trade period.

Collingwood has shown interest in Welsh, who like McPhee has the option of nominating for the national or pre-season drafts if a deal can not be struck.

Welsh, 26, will return from Bali later this week for discussions with his management as a deadline on a decision approaches.

Collingwood remains keen on adding Luke Ball to its list despite missing out on him on the final day of trade week.

Hang on Andrew walsh is leaving essendon?

When did this happen?
not leaving, but he and mcphee have been offered 2 year deals (26 and 27 respectively) whereas williams got a three year deal and they are kinda pissed! lol

i read that article, and seeing as welsh came back from a broken leg and still had better stats than ball this year in terms of averages (as well as being able to shut down judd!) he is worth a crack, offer him 4 years and be done with it! :)
only stat i couldn't find was clearances (no longer on the AFL websites apparently and couldn't get them on the HUN website as the links for 'more stats' just took me back to the same page! Figure this is a sticking point, but having a tagger who can also get 20 odd touches couldn't be bad, 26 is a decent age for our list too.

Yet to re-sign, ditto McPhee.
hmm

id have him in a heart beat, given Ball's injury concerns id even consider taking him before ball in the unlikely event we had the choice

yep read the article and agree with that too

A half way decent tagger, with good disposal and ball winning ability. Almost fall off your chair stuff

not to have a go, but next time don't copy/paste the whole article as BF can get in trouble :( just post a link, a paragraph then the link again :)

sorry to bring it up as i know you were only trying to do the right thing for the rest of us :)

Good call. Fixed.

Good call. Fixed.
cheers, saves the mods any probs i imagine

thanks for finding the stats, by the looks of it, they are pretty even across the board, ball better first possession, they have pretty much the same stats across the board otherwise.

would first possession be more what we need? someone who goes in hard and grabs the thing, then dishes it out to the runners or the better users? is that what the stat means? not actually counted as a clearance but the first with hands on the pill?

it's all speculation either way, we might get neither, but it would be awesome to get one of them!

also with a fair few quality players in the preseason draft (ball, macdonald, robertson, smith) a half decent player is bound to be available even for a bit of depth a la brown last year (even though we took him in the actual draft, you get my point)

Welsh absolutely annihilated us once in the clearances. He's a solid tagger, slowish, but reasonable skills from what I've seen.

That said, Essendon would love to keep him, I imagine they'll offer up what he wants (within reason obviously). Hopefully we can get in his ear and convince him to ditch them though.

Welsh is not a dud by any stretch but we need top end talent to win a flag. Elite pace & skill or elite clearance ability with good skills. Burgoyne was the one we NEEDED. Ball would at least address one deficiency albeit without good footskills, unless he could get his groins right. Welsh has good run, ok pace and acceptable skills but I'd rather play Sidebottom, Beams and McCarthy at this point. Welsh would get a game but he wouldn't improve the side much.

Hell yes we should have a crack!!!!

Exactly what we need in every way. A mature midfielder in the age bracket we lack, hard bodied, good disposal skills, high ball winning quality tagger. I'd have him over Ball.

Throw 4 years and dollars $$$$$ his way.

Probably just posturing by the players for better deals but while there is a crack of doubt in his mind, or a slight chance of getting him, we should throw everything at him.

Fortune favours the brave.

Do we need another half back flanker though?

Every time we play Essendon, he plays on Didak or Medhurst, so to me, that says he is a backman.

McPhee is in similar vein.

Having said that, the order I would place the 3 possibles in would be;

* Welsh
* McPhee
* Ball

If you are picking up a player with pick 30 (our last remaining decent draft pick), that player better be able to play 100 games for us, which Luke Ball almost certainly couldn't but Welsh and McPhee may be able to do.

I'd still prefer a youngster with pick 30, and if anyone is available in the 4th round, take them then, or the PSD.

Can we really afford to miss an entire draft, well almost.

Welsh however is an elite tagger, which is something we desperately lack. His age, his contested ball winning ability and posession rate, his mature body, leadership skills and good disposal skills on top of this are all things that would be a great benefit to our team.

Get 'em both... Welsh could well be available for pick #3404 in the National Draft if he nominates, or equally in the PSD given there'll be plenty of other options around and not every team will have a selection.

Ball or Josh Thomas at #30, depending upon availability.

Welsh is a quality player and easily in our best 22. Has enough tricks to be a player who plays well until very late in his career. Certainly worth getting. I'd take him @ 30 over Ball.

Watch Michael Voss get a boner and try to lure him to Brisbane.
