Thinking of getting the new Sony Xperia XZ. Been generally impressed with their phones before. Anybody got it yet?

Either that or the HTC 10.

It seems the vast majority of what Telstra stocks is Apple or Samsung, which I don't want either of them. Guess that what people want.

Only just replaced my s2. It was still going fairly strong (overclocked) up until a few weeks ago when it started thinking it had run out of storage (10gb free). Replaced with a 5x which is lightning. Loving it so far, though may take a while to get used to the bigger size.

So what's the best smartphone currently out there for an absolute maximum of $600? Which I guess is midrange territory with the top of the range phones up over $1k.

My LG G3 is starting to do a lot of weird stuff, random resets and so on.

Ideally I'd like a phone with an SD card slot, but that's not 100% critical.

Funnily enough the Lumia 950 XL ticks a lot of boxes. Currently $500  But what's out there in Android land? There doesn't seem to be much at that <$600 point that would be a decent upgrade on the G3. I paid $580 for the G3 two years ago and from what I can tell, phones around that price still tend to offer pretty much the same performance as the G3 (or worse!) which is ridiculous. Phones like the Nexus 5X fall into this category. Am I missing something?

Agree! I upgraded from the M7 on Sunday and that is my only negative for the 10.
Good stuff, glad a few more people are getting into them. Such an underrated phone! That's also my only issue with it as well, the M7 and M8 speakers are amazing. Speakers on the 10 are still good, just not as good. Have you changed the speaker output to Theatre Mode? Makes a big difference. The included headphones are unbelievable.

I love my Galaxy S5, have had it for 2 and half years and still going strong.
If they're under $600 that would be my choice... If my phone dies I'll probably buy another S5 instead of upgrading.

This is what I find strange, the G3 and S5 were competitors 2 years ago, but the S5 still costs roughly the same today as what I spent back then for the G3. Which was no slouch:

I was expecting that if I spent $x 2 years ago, spending $x again today would get me a much better phone than what I got back then, not essentially the same phone by another company. Have smartphones stagnated that much? :(

Looking at getting a new android phone.

One that I feel suits my needs and price is the one plus 3......anyone managed to have a play around with one before?

They're fantastic. Would recommend. If I hadn't picked up my Moto X I would have gotten one myself.

I picked up a Moto X Play for 400. SD card slot, Stupidly big battery and stock android with a scheduled upgrade to Nougat. Runs smooth as well. Would recommend.

Settled on the Moto X Style/Pure, which I guess is the model up from the Play. Satisfied my criteria (less than $600, SD card support, a worthwhile upgrade on the LG G3) with the added bonus of pretty much stock Android.

Looking forward to its arrival :)

I would have gone the style if money would allow. Nice choice, enjoy!

Was just coming in to ask for people's experiences with the Sony phones. I am looking to upgrade and whilst my first thought was just get the s7 I saw the XZ and it looks pretty good. I guess the obvious thing is it is only an HD rather than 2K screen. Anyone have any experience with them or Sony phones in general?

I have a Z3 compact currently. Virtually same hardware as Z3, just smaller screen size. Been a good phone overall, but developed a problem where the screen lifted up in the top right corner, which affected some sensor, which is the apparent cause of the screen turning off during calls. This is irritating when you are pressing buttons on an optioned menu. Known issue with the phone, was seemingly to do with location of USB input which they have fixed now.

Other than that, it's been really good. Would purchase Sony again for sure, some people don't like the aesthetics though. I do though.

I'm all about the functionality.

I've also got a Z3 compact and pretty happy with it.

There are two things I don't like though, the flap to plug in a usb charging cable (this can be alleviated with a charging dock) and the slow pace of Android upgrades.

Other than those two things it's excellent.

Terrific phone. I've been loving it the last 6 months or so that I've had it. So long as the size isn't too big it is great. Pocketnow regard it as still the best large Android bang for buck you can get.

Shudder. I have just come from an S5. It did the job, but Touchwiz holds it back.

I bought a Nexus 6P as outright for $611 (Australian stock) brand new. I really like it. Would definitely recommend the 6P over the S5, it is streets ahead.

Be careful buying from Kogan. It's mostly international stock, and can be missing some of the bands that our carriers use. This can result in bad reception on your phone.
I've got full 4G on Telstra network. I made sure to cross check it with the available bands in Aus before purchasing.
