When is the distinction made between Great Britain and English/Scottish/Welsh.

Easily.

England, Scotland and Wales are the kingdoms that make up the United Kingdom. You can be English, but you're also British.

If I was Andy I'd make sure my nationality was well known to be Scottish.

He can be as Scottish as he likes, but the country initial next to his name will always "GBR". Same deal as David Coulthard.

I understand the literal distinction between the two  .

Great Britain is a kingdom made up of three countries as far as I know. Some sports separate them and others don't, just curious as to when and why this is done.

Murray does make sure people know he is Scottish. Very proud in fact. Seen his scottish wristbands at wimbledon last year etc.

And He has way more improvment to go than Nadal. Nadal wont improve his serve because he'd have to reconstruct his whole serving techneque. Nadal will probably still win the next 10 French opens because he is the best Baseliner and best counter puncher in the game, One of the best ever, But Murray showed how vulnerable he is at the net, and Nadal isnt going to bother to learn how to volley now, he will just camp at the Baseline.

You might want to google for some of Andy Murray's comments and the reaction in England around (soccer) World Cup time re that topic.

The lad is a proud Dunblane boy who is no more fond of the British(English) tennis scene than your average Aussie is... though it must be noted THEY pay Brad Gilbert to coach him.

Half of those things are said tongue in cheek.

He said he doesnt hate the English football team, he just doesnt like them, which is fair enough because not many Scotsman do.

He does, however, try to come across like he cares (after Wimbledon he said he was disappointed at Englands loss to Portugal in the World Cup) because most of his fanbase is based in England.

40 Million People in England, 12ish Million in Scotland, 6 Million in Wales and around 3-4 Million in Norn Ireland

Where do you get those numbers from?

England has over 50 mil, Scotland and Wales both just over 5 mil and Northern Ireland has under 2 mil.

I don't see any reason why Murray would represent Scotland apart from sentimental reasons. The country he's from is Great Britain, let's keep it simple. I'm not a fan of having Scotland as a seperate country in football either.

Nothing against Scottish people of course, my sister in law's one, but I don't get why Scotland should represent itself. All Flemish and Wallonians represent Belgium, all Catalans, Andalucians, Basques.. represent Spain...

Mate I saw the media at the time and it was simply 'I support any team who plays England' etc etc.

The latter comments re Portugal smacked of 'balancing up' PR as you suggest. I'm not suggesting it's a deep-seated hatred but as I said, he supports their teams about as much as the average Australian does.

So GBR? Meh.
