Andy Otten's positional history

Otten is a good player. A smart footballer. The type who is reasonable in almost any role on the ground. He even was ok in the ruck when we ran out of talls that time.

Issue with him now is his mobility after two knee reconstructions. Has limited him to that 2nd/3rd tall role at either end of the ground.
This. If he's going to have an AFL career now, I reckon it's as a legit key defender. He's undersized height wise, but plays well on taller opponents. He's the only Crow who can ever stop Westhoff, for example.

No, not right.

The original point I made was that Otten was a player once touted as a future midfielder who DIDN'T end up playing there.

That was the starting point of the conversation.

WW pointing out that Otten never played AFL as a mid... yeah, no shit. In other words, what I said.

The issue is whether he was ever talked of as being a midfielder at AFL level.

After his breakthrough Rising Star runner up season he was training with our midfield group in the 2009/10 preseason when he first did his knee.

Agreed. Before his first knee injury Otten was touted as a future midfielder. He had very good poise and agility in traffic without the speed. One might even had said that he was one of the few players who made time seem to slow down when he had the ball. Unfortunately, after multiple serious injuries, he now has no physical attributes, apart from height, and has no agility and the turning circle of the Queen Mary. I don't like him deep in defence.

I tend to agree that he is probably finished, but he does provide some reserve depth and is still clever enough to do a few very good things. I'll give him a chance.

You should know i don't shoot from the hip .......did you watch his U18 championship year and Oakleigh games?? .....i did

So in case i need to support what i post :

Phantom Draft: Matt Burgan

...One recruiter believes Otten is similar to Collingwood's Scott Pendlebury.

So he was drafted to be an AFL mid just like you said he wasn't.

Par for the course :thumbsu:

& Darling...

I agree, we could play Talia, Otten & Lever... however, Hartigan has 1st dibbs, but Otten is a handy backup to have on the list.

Just have a feeling he's not quite a spent force yet. Came back well in rhe SANFL in 2015. Big year for him coming up

Not the quickest .......not as slow as some suggest ......but footy smart, with great hands .....agree not a spent force yet

Has everyone discounted my man Shaw?

yep, had a turning circle like the Titanic after his first one.

nice guy and good player but he wouldn't be the first of those to miss out on a good career due to injury.

if he could direct a kick in bounds once and a while he'd be a great player

He came back very well from injury last year and played some quality footy. He's a chance

that he did, but he still turned like the Titanic.

I think its just going to be a deficiency in his game now that he'll have to learn to cover. It certainly isn't all over for him, Truck was one of the least agile players in the entire league and he could hold Buddy as well as anyone, its just about knowing your game.

still has some great strings to his bow, but you look at the most damaging forward lines in the comp and how much pace they have and it makes me nervous. Since he went down we lost Luke Thompson but added Lever, Cheney and Kelly who could all be competing for similar-ish spots. Otten probably still holds versatility as his major trump card but if everyone is playing well its going to be incredibly tight for spots.

So Where did i get the impression from of a Midfielder /Mid ........just every video ....most games ....and a lot of very well respected BF posters views at the time in 2007
I was referring to him being drafted as a forward/mid and being a more natural forward than Jenkins.

Sorry my bad typing ......i did say Otten WAS recruited as a Forward / Mid ......and he is a more natural forward than Jenkins

I'll go back in terms of evidentiary support in my original post .......but Otten played primarily as a Forward and was draft as such ......there's no debate on that point ...fact

I hope he turns into a gun!

CEY looked the goods to last season. Surprised he didn't play the whole season. Cannot wait to see what he's got this season.

Otten has caused some confusion as he is a utility who can play anywhere.

He learnt his trade as a ball-magnet midfielder in the SANFL, but found his way into our AFL team as a defender when he was runner-up in the rising star.

It was intended that he would become a midfield option, like many who start off in defence... but then the knee injury which has cruelled his career.

He has shown he can hold down a defensive key post & also that he has the instincts to play up forward (his goal kicking looks dodgy but effective).

Hope he genuinely surprises this year, as showed some form late last year. Is a very handy experienced backup utility to have if Hartigan struggles, Talia is injured, or one of our KPP forwards is unavailable.
