G'day fellas,
Just wondering what the expectations of Monfries are for 2007. I saw he performed very well in the opening round of the NAB Cup - how have his games been since then? How much improvement can you see in him this year? And how much time do you expect him to play in the midfield?

Cheers
Best of luck for 2007

Saw that he was named in the best in one of papers after his performance yesterday. I thought he was solid, but certainly not in the best. It was one of his quieter games to be honest. I thought it was McVeigh, Winders and Slattery (whose 2nd half performance went totally un-noticed) that got us back into the game. Excellent workrate.

Our player with the clubs best work rate (Stanton) was disappointing.

Back onto Monfries ... i guess we judge him has as most of us believe that this kid is special. 2007 will be a real break-out year for him, and i guess we as supporters judge him harshly because he is so talented.

Did Mcveigh really get 38 possesions as the herald sun reported?

Well I didn't realise he got that many but he was very, very good. Our best by far.

Monfries IMO will play about 40% in the midfield and the rest at half forward. Think he could average about 15-20 touches and a goal which would be great.

also played well against west coast were he booted another 3 goals.
i agree he will get more game time in the midfield were he belongs but also will kick goals when up forward aswell. if he can get 1 or two goals a game and average 20 possies he will have done well.

He was the only good thing about the 1st half. My expectations of him are high I expect him to go close to winning our b and f behind Lovett.

Slats wasn't un noticed he played well in the last quarter and did his bit in the 3rd quarter.

If Jetta or Davey come into the side than when they're up forward it'll probably push Monfries onto the ball with one of our midfeilders having a break on the bench.

It all depends on how well he goes in the middle when he gets the oppertunity though. In the middle he would have similar characteristics to Marc Murphy. Both have played under 50 games but look like they're 100+ game players at times. Monfries also sheds some Mercs for mine, which i love.

Basically, this kid could become anything if you ask me. He has the ability and work ethic to be one of the best players in the competition if he continues to work hard over the next 2-3 seasons.

Re: Angus Monspubisfrieks

He's a classy player and tough as nails as well. The biggest challenge for him this year would be to be more consistent through a game instead of having a few cameo's, but a move to the midfield should help that. If he can become a regular possession getter would be a huge plus for us.

Sure he managed a couple of nice goals. I just think in the second one he should have done the team thing and centred the ball, not gone for a "hollywood" kick. Hindsight says "yeah but he kicked a goal and we might not have had he centred it", but I'm sure instuctions from Sheeds would be to do the percentage thing at all costs and centre the ball.

And Murphy shouldn't have gone for the super goal and Bryce should have handballed rather than waltzing past four opponents.

Monfries is a gun and players like should be allowed to do what ever comes natural just like Murphy, Fevola and Gibbs. :thumbsu: :)

You wouldn't want them to lose their attacking instinct by doing the team thing when that nearly won you the match.

That is actually a good point, surprsingly from you. ;)

too many of our players especially the young midfielders in our team suffer from being gun shy when coming forward with the ball.

Just pull the bloody trigger and have a shot.

Monfries looks poised for a big year.

Ever since he come onto the scene in 2005 he has thrown himself into any contest with little regard for his safety, and I'm pretty sure that wins over just about any footy fan!

Extremely talented youngster, should be tried in the midfield at some stage, but should spend plenty of time around the sticks, expecting him to kick about 25 this season!

Actually Flint is quite well informed about footy and usually makes well informed opinions.
Mojo must have been a bad influence. ;)
Also is usually respectful whilst on our boards, and for mine, is welcome here anytime.
Goes a bit Feral when he gets back to his own board though :D
I'm no Bluesman, but nothing beats venting at someone who acts like a tool your board. :)
I've been pumping him up for the last 12 months as the next Ben Cousins Might put that one away methinks
The comparisons between Murphy and Cousins or Kerr who were clean cut as kids has me worried.

Monfries might be the fish that got away.

Andrew Walker taking them on and coming from nowhere to spoil with a superhuman leap will always be worth the price of admission. Fevola nearly soccered a goal back over his head from the boundary line in one practice match and he's now a superstar who can kick them from 60. :D

We kick 20 points a game anyway, massive weakness of ours so they may as well have a crack.

But where do you draw the line. If you give free reign to all players then you end up having a very individualistic "team". No I dont want them to lose their attacking instinct, but I also would like them to play the percentages a bit more when possible.

i dont know what you expected Gus to do against Carlton, there was 2 mins left and we were 10 points down we had to be as attacking as possible and in any case i'd back him in 9 times out of 10.
