MVP Annual “426 Memorial Trophy” Leader Board - 2019

Hello everyone, thank god it is soon to happen. I trust you are all looking forward to what we all hope will be a very defining season for our great club. I must admit I am suffering from a little bit of the good old MFCSS syndrome. We have a very hard draw, and this is what causes me some trepidation. Nevertheless, I am still pumped; we have 2 of the best 5 players in the League, (come at me) so that makes me feel a bit optimistic.

And in line with the principles of this competition we have clearly demonstrated our impeccable knowledge of how the system works by agreeing with the umpires from last year that Gus was the third best player, unfortunately we thought he was only the third best player in our team!

As we all know Gus was invited to our presentation last year, as opposed to that other minor fun show. And you would all clearly remember his speech where he plagiarised Chamberlain by saying: there will be premierships in our time. What a great night.

Anyhoo the fabled and mythical Annual “426 Memorial Trophy” Leader Board is back for 2019. I am going a little bit against what might be the flow and hoping like hell that “Sizzle” will be our winner, because if he is, the lid is totally and completely off.

Closing time for votes will be Tuesday night for Friday night (finally getting a few) and Saturday games, Wednesday night for Sunday games, and Sunday the 28th for Anzac Eve. So, remember folks, vote early, vote often

And hey, American AFL you have carte blanche here, just get your votes in before the next game if you are interested in participating.

Voting is 12 votes anyway you like, ie Round 1 - TheDarkDwarf - 12 votes. Thank you, thank you very much.

Here is the Honour Board for your perusal:

* that shows you how bad we have been when Oliver and Brayshaw are fighting for a place and they've ok at best.

710711

And with 6 rounds remaining, only 4 people can win (though it will take some luck for 2nd, 3rd, 4th to catch up)
Will Gawn become a 3-time champion?
Will Salem make a comeback to bridge the gap?
How come barely anyone is voting in these now?
If anyone has any opinions on these leader-boards, let me know.

Somebody update that title cause we have a winner!

That's right, with a margin of 39 with 3 rounds remaining, we now have another 3-time winner with Maxxy Gawn.
He's been red-hot favourite to win since even before the bye (with those 5 BOGs in a row helping a lot).
Injuries and rumours of injuries threatened to derail his campaign but faced it all as Melbourne's definitive A-Lister
721869

Of Course, there's still a lot to play for...
Salem, Oliver and Harmes are still jostling for those other podium spots with only 10 points separating them.
Hore's return might see a return to form to fight back against Jones, Hunt, Brayshaw and Viney (though none have scored since the last update)
Melksham, once in the Top 5, may be knocked out of the Top 10 by Petracca and Fritsch.

FULL LEADERBOARD AND HONOUR BOARD TO COME OUT AFTER ROUND 23

And with 2019 over and hopefully soon forgotten, we now know which players this board considers have been the best this year. While the drop-off of voters throughout the season seemed to get worse with the performance on-field, we did manage to get a full set of points out every week.

Here are the Top 10 players of the Melbourne Football Club as voted by the BigFooty Melbourne Board for the 2019 AFL season
R23 LBoard.png

Max Gawn on top should surprise no one, having been Best-On-Ground for almost half the games, though Clayton Oliver almost scored more points than Gawn in the final 6 rounds. Oliver fell short by half a point, 45 to 44.5.

Salem and Harmes, on the other hand, had quiet form after the bye compared to their scores before. Salem's dominant performance in Round 1 saw him take 77% of that round's votes, the highest percentage of votes anyone got for the season. Harmes' consistent performances saw him play every game for the season along with Oliver, Brayshaw, Jones, Petracca, Fritsch and Frost.

Hore finishing 5th is quite the feat, considering he didn't score any points after his initial injury. Even the player in 12th finished within striking distance of Hore, who is sure to take home Best First Year player this season after his performances between rounds 4 and 10.

Viney, Brayshaw, Petracca, Jones, Fritsch, Hunt, Melksham make up what was the mad dash in the final rounds to see who would finish Top 10, and while some people are going to be surprised that we (as a group) didn't somehow vote Nathan "Not Best 22" Jones or Jack "The Other Captain" Viney out, it ends up being Jayden "Can't Draw" Hunt and Jake "Essendon Player" Melksham who got the short end of the stick. Brayshaw's first 3 rounds kept him at the top for the whole season while Petracca and Fritsch barley scrapped in but also deserve to be in the Top 10, maybe more than others.

Of course there's the tally of Total Votes to show off with will be shown off here:

Not-So-Fun Fact: 5 players failed to score any votes. They were Neville Jetta, Mitch Hannan, Jay Kennedy-Harris, Kade Kolojashnij and Kade Chandler.

It will an interesting off-season, albeit a familiar one. See you next year for the next chapter of this celebration and hope that 2020 gives us more ups than downs.

Thank you!

EDIT: FootyGuy13, I don't recall Yze being on previous lists of past winners. I had a feeling White won in '04 - did your research find otherwise?
At some stage this year I got wondering about why the MVP award started in '04 and not earlier and (aside from the fascinating way people acted on this board in the early years and learning how to use the filter function) found a 2002 MVP thread with votes from all rounds (The 2001 version only started in Round 10 while the 2003 one stopped after 3 rounds, including one thread during Round 20 asking why we don't have a MVP thread). Then I found the 2004 thread of which the first post states that Yze won. A bit more digging showed that the Honour Board in 2007 didn't include 2004, while 2008 stated that White won in 2004 and has stated that ever since.

Here's the '04 thread: https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/mfc-mvp-leaderboard.107679/
