Annual rant - ANZAC jumpers and merch

The Melbourne jumper is $95, not sure how much goes to the troopers but it is farce.

If the AFL really cared the ANZAC match should be WestCoast v Collingwood in Perth with all donations heading to the Perth RSL.

You can also alternate the Melbourne v Richmond with a game in Adelaide or Sydney if need be.
It was mainly in reference to ANZAZC Day being a National Holiday and providing the opportunity to supports RSL clubs nationally.

Why would we care about the RSL?

I completely agree with that. I'm replying to the topkent's idea that the soldiers died "for our freedom".
Agree. It is because of the sheer waste of life that all Australian soldiers (outside of WWII) should be remembered. The sentiment of the day is off in my opinion. It should be more about the futility of war and less about the romanticism of it.

Couldn't agree more with the sentiment of the OP. If the AFL cares, make it known that every dollar of merchandising revenue is given to returned service charities. Running at a commercial loss for the weeks leading up would be a far more appropriate gesture for the sacrifices that were made.

Agreed but what are you gonna do?

I'm waiting for the inevitable newspaper headline should Merrett win the BOG...
AN-ZACH MEDAL HERO

Demanding that our politicians enforce the law would be a good start

Absolutely despise it.
Anzac Day has been made more prominent, in part, because of footy so the game has played its part in making the younger generation appreciate it.
But it's gone too far now.
It should be a day of solemn respect.
But today we just can't seem to do anything unless it's at a million miles an hour.

I think for anyone who has actually attended ANZAC day will tell you it's they pretty good job of honouring service men and women both past and current. Its never going to be perfect but they do really make an effort. The underlying tone is always going to have a vein of commercialism but you need that to make the event profitable for everyone involved.

I'd question how many of those complaining turn up to the dawn service.

I think the jumpers are disgusting, but I do know that Richmond donates 100% of profits from theirs.
Also, while I'm at it, only play the Last Post on the day itself. Playing it for all other games on other days really pisses me off.

What is there to celebrate?

Bunch of boys being tricked into service to fight another mans battles. Senselessly slaughtered by another bunch of boys being tricked into service on the other side of the fence.

There is nothing gallant or glorious about it.

This. And history will continue to repeat itself as long as we continue to glorify it.

That's a naïve view. WW2 aside, show me how we "fought for freedom" in ww1 or vietnam (or Iraq, etc)

I certainly found it interesting to learn that presidents as far back as Kennedy knew that there was no possibility of 'winning' in Vietnam, but that it would be political suicide to withdraw. And so they stayed. And the bodies piled up...

pies doubling down with big freeze memberships now. donating $10 of a $170 membership but including a $20 beanie that you'd otherwise have to buy direct. Wowwee
