NO TROLLS Another AFL player charged with sexual assault

Mate, this is what happens in other sports (i.e. players are stood down while under this investigation) and there isn't a defamation lawsuit going on there AFAIK.

You cannot have someone on an active rape charge playing AFL, it's pretty much unthinkable and the crowd reaction would make Adam Goodes look like the world's most popular man.
How about we dont ruin peoples lives until a court has actually looked at evidence and decided if they are guilty or not. Horrible terrifying world we live in with the concept of accused having zero right to defend themselves.

I tend to agree. People don't realise how many false or exaggerated accusations happen now.

Yeah but let’s not over-egg things either, this is an anonymous internet forum synonymous with mostly blokes just shooting the breeze, talking $&&@, zero real world importance.

Courts treating this place like The Age is a category error. It’s water cooler banter.

Banter? Are you aware of the incident being discussed?

Very minimal compared to the number of unreported sexual assaults. False claims of sexual assault are not an issue with our society.
You should actually read a post before you answer it. No mention of sexual assault in my post. It is a generalisation referenced to idea of waiting for edivence before a verdict, paraphrasing there.

Irrelevant

Best analogy is perhaps with Nathan For You's 'Dumb Starbucks' episode and parody laws.

Put simply, it's well known in the community that this place ain't serious.
So to be clear, when people speculate on who sexual assault victims and perpetrators are, it's water cooler banter? Well you learn something new every day.

A very very small percentage of rapes or sexual assaults are reported. An even smaller amount result in charges being laid due to great difficulty in proving a crime was committed and it being unlikely of a conviction. So we absolutely need to retain an assumption of innocence, but the fact it has gotten this far is really really worrying for all concerned.

Sorry are you seriously saying that people aren't idly speculating about this with friends and colleagues in all sorts of social contexts? I guarantee you even the footy-loving court judges are doing exactly that during their smoko between cases.

Ban gossiping? I don't think you will ever change human nature to that extent.

Important to separate that kind of thing (which is clearly what this place is IMO) from serious news outlets, however.

Feel free to throw names out then in the name of "banter". You do you.

If the name actually comes to light, it's better for all involved for the player/employee to be stood down on full pay.

You saw what happened to Adam Goodes for throwing an imaginary spear. Can you imagine how the crowd would behave toward someone who had been charged with rape?

Can you imagine the shadow that would leave over teammates, who have no idea whether to trust the person or not?

It's such a serious charge that the player is best left out of the public eye until the matter is settled.

Yeah, completely untrue if you look at the statistics. The power is firmly on the side of the accused when it comes to sexual assault accusations. I recommend 'Eggshell Skull' or 'Night Games'. A range of studies show approximately 5% of rape allegations are proven false. You know what is a big number... 90% of survivors never go forward with accusations for myriad of reasons - one being the prejudice that is thrown the way of predominately women and children and the other being the exhausting and heartbreaking process of retelling their story.

I have sat through rape cases, they are incredibly challenging, and yes, sometimes the accusations made are thrown out in court because they can't be substantiated, but considering how many people do not receive justice for a complaint, they must be taken seriously and generally are.

The process of collecting, collating, interviewing evidence is arduous, particularly on the alleged victim, but for all involved. Anyone who knows the criminal justice system understands that there is due process. This is really dangerous rhetoric, and hovers into the victim-blaming territory.

Another person who does not read the post and keeps the context. There was no mention of sexual assault in my post. I am alluding to the number of false, fake, and misleading statements and accusations that are so common now.

5% proven false..That is not the same as 5% are false. Even basic probability would suggest the number is far higher

It’s lower when taking a strict view of proven false. Even then the “false” accusations can come with a lot of other stipulations. Another thing to remember those “false” accusations aren’t very likely to go to trial.

Also way too many women experience sexual assault and most will never report it. I’ve heard more than enough horror stories that were never reported.

What is prevalent worldwide has been an attitude by cops and the general public in not believing victims making them even less likely to come forward.

That should be up to the player who is yet to be proven guilty, not the club. You nor the club have any right to destroy the life of a msn yet to stand trial. Imagine you eventually end up inmocent and you had to stand down from your career and ruin your life in the process of lost AFL earnings and success.

Adam goodes got booes for pointing at a 13 year old in the crowd and shaming her, not for throwing a spear. Never heard anyone ever say that
