This whole adventure will be seen as a worse idea than Iraq. When, if ever, will it end? Will we know if it does end?

Bloody sad about the poor bastards who are giving up their lives for no reason. It seems to be inevitable that morale within our forces there will be suffering, not to mention that of the families of those who die.

This may sound harsh but, they are soldiers who have weapons & go to war torn countries, why are people so shocked some poor bugger gets killed. FFS, I can't believe people actually join the armed forces, knowing there is every chance they are going to die & what for?:(

As that song goes "war, what is it good for, absoultely nothing".

Afghanistan I've always understood, Iraq I haven't.

Why would it be a worse idea than Iraq, skilts? At least there was a reason behind them going in to Afghanistan.

If you did a poll of the soldiers I think you'd find nearly all of them are happy to be over there. If they come back in one piece it's a big gravy train that can really set young families up (as long as the wife doesn't spend all the money installing a pool and landscaping a Defence Force house, true story)

If they didn't want to go there they wouldn't join categories/branches that would give them a much higher chance of going.

Haven't seen any Afghanistan terrorists in Australia killing anyone, us being over there & fighting them, has more chance of making us a target, GTFO of there I say, before anymore young Aussies get killed for no reason.
As a pinko, bleeding heart pacifist lefty, I really don't understand the mentality of people wanting us to leave the stan.

Unfortunately, as much as it pains me to say it, if we aren't fighting there now... we will most likely be defending India in a nuclear war in the future. :(

Rubbish, stop believeing the Yank propoganda. If a nuclear war starts we are all dead, that's the reason no one has done it.

Generally the SAS frown on that.

F them, wouldn't he rather be alive?

OH & Jafa you stalker, the reason I know you haven't is because you are always posting on BF, people in the Army who are trying to stay alive don't, now go back to looking at your porn.

The thing is - these guys are pretty much the elite. They chose a life direction knowing full well what they where getting themselves into. Going AWOL wouldn't enter their minds.

Do you know who this man is?

We saw Australians being killed in New York when the towers came down. 11 in fact. We also saw Australians involved in the london bombings as well. We are not imune to this because of our locality.

If we say no when we are asked - we can expect to be told no when we ask. And regardless of your feelings towards America - they are a pretty powerful ally.

Neither of those incidents had anything to do with Afghanistan.

You will recall the Talibs actually offered to hand up Bin Laden for trial by an international court by the Yanks refused.

On Afghanistan. I interviewed Royal Marine Commandos from 45 Commando before they left and they are over there now getting killed every week. Quite eerie to think that guys I'd spoken to are in a few cases dead now.

I've had other mates go over there in the journo sense and they reckon its wild.

I've actually got an American flag hanging on my wall that a mate bought off the Pakistani Taliban in Peshawar. They'd captured it off the Yanks in a raid. Apparentley they also had American flak jackets for sale that weren't in the best condition. Grim.

To be honest, ten dead soldiers in 8 years doesn't sound that bad. How many combat soldiers do we have in Afghanistan, anyone know?

At least it's not in the thousands, like the Americans have lost. It would seem to me also that given many, if not most of our diggers are SAS, it does seem likely that they would be in more danger than most. So to lose only 10 lives in all that times sounds like a pass mark to me.

Just a shame that the Americans let Afghanistan go to waste while they concentrated on Iraq. Things should be getting better, not worse.

I agree with these sentiments. Also, I hate the way Lord Rudd gets up on his pedestal and says the whole nation mourns the soldiers' deaths. Of course, I understand why he does it - any PM of ours would - it just irks me that Afghanis are killed and nobody knows their names or much cares whereas our soldiers shoot back and win VCs or else get killed and are glorified.

Invading other nations is something that ought to go to referendum.

Australians have been killed in attacks around the world by people who have at some stage trained or been harboured in Afghanistan.

Do you think if we ignore it, it will just go away and they'll leave us alone?

They're professional soldiers, they've volunteered it's their choice. You mightn't like it or agree with it but it's their call.

If it goes on much longer we'll start getting to the stage where a lot of the people sent over there are people who have enlisted since this s**t fight started so they know full well it's a distinct possibility they could end up over there.

If they didn't want to be there they wouldn't volunteer for the SAS or commando regiments.
