Philippine blasts kill four
Thursday, October 17, 2002 Posted: 3:47 AM EDT (0747 GMT)

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines -- Four people have been killed and more than 80 injured after two bombs exploded in the southern Philippine city of Zamboanga, police say.

The first bomb went off at the Shop-o-Rama department store in the city at about 11:40 a.m. local time (0340 GMT), killing at least three people.

Shortly afterwards, as police were defusing another bomb at the same location, a second bomb exploded at another department store about a block away, killing at least one person and wounding several others.

Police described the bombs as incendiary explosive devices and believe they may have been detonated by timers. There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo immediately condemned the latest terrorist strike to hit her impoverished country.

Rescue teams have rushed to the scene to treat the wounded.

One unidentified teenager, pressing a white towel to her forehead at the medical center, told ABS-CBN television that she was walking in front of Shop-o-Rama when she heard a loud explosion.

"I fell down and blood was oozing from my forehead," The Associated Press reported her as saying, adding that she had soaked through three towels and also had an arm injury but was being sent home after treatment, apparently to make room for more seriously injured victims.

Recent attacks

An October 2 blast in Zamboanga killed four people, including a U.S. Green Beret commando, and injured about two dozen others.

Officials blamed the attack on the Muslim extremist group Abu Sayyaf -- tied to Osama bin Laden's terrorist network -- which warned a week earlier it would mount attacks on civilian, military and U.S. targets to retaliate for the ongoing government offensive against Muslim rebels in the southern Philippines.

Just over a week later, on October 10, an attack in a crowded bus station in Kidapawan city -- also in the southern Philippines -- killed six people and wounded ten others

The latest bombings come on the heels of a deadly terrorist attack on the Island of Bali in Indonesia that killed more than 180 people over the weekend.

Indonesian Defense Minister Matori Abdul Djalil has implicated al Qaeda for the Saturday night explosions in a Bali entertainment district.

Not good news at all.

Zamboanga's been a bit of a flashpoint over the last couple of years with friction between the Muslim and Christian populations there. Islamic extremists want a Islamic state there and have been clashing with Christians there, there was the kidnapping of the US tourists there and several attacks conducted by extremists, can't remember their name at the moment. I think Zamboanga is majority Muslim despite the Philippines being a largely Catholic country.

On the news they said it was a mainly Catholic town. Its all to do with JI wanting to set up a Islamic superstate in South East Asia. The Bali bomb was related to this. They are trying to drive away tourists and the Christains so they can impose a Taliban like government. Proves that Howards policy had nothing to do with the Bali bombings and that Australia was the target

Yeah, I heard that on the news report too, I was hoping no one would pick up my mistake! :p

Scary times indeed in SE Asia at the moment, it seems like over night it's become a terrorist hotspot (despite the fact that there's been terrorist problems in Indonesia & Philippines for some time now).

On the good side, if there actually is one, hopefully this may draw Australia closer to our SE Asian neighbours as we battle to oppose the common foe - terrorism.

hmmm, i'd much rather than just stay away from here.

I would say Australia could be one of the targets for these terrorist ****ers as it is big, desert like for the most part and is very hard to invade.

Just as a radical hypothetical, if they were able to take over Australia (but god knows while the people in this country still have a heart beat these ********s won't do that) it would be very easy for them to be able to launch an all out assault on America from a land such as this, as it is reasonably close to America and very secure.

After reading the Tomorrow, when the war began when I was younger, I thought about whether it would be as easy Marsden suggests it would. And now that I think about it, it would. We don't have much of a defence at all, our armed forces are scattered around the country, which would make it easier for the invaders. Place, we don't have much to resist with - not everyone has a gun in their home. If the invaders did it with a huge force and covered the continent in a few days, there would be not much to stop them. Sad as it is. I just hope I haven't put ideas in their heads....

From an article I read on the News.com.au website, the Americans have given Megawati until the 24th to crack down on JI and other terrorist groups in Indonesia or be labelled a 'terrorist haven' ie. open to US and Allied assaults.

If much more drama happens up north in the next few days/weeks I wouldn't be surprised if the US start bombing some of the known terrorist camps in Indonesia and possibly the Philippines too within the next month.

Australians are pretty resilient and we tend to underestimate ourselves too. Not many Australians would take an invasion laying down, the invading force would have to be prepared to take a fair few lives to get what they want.

It also would be pretty exceptional circumstances if we were left to fight alone, despite views by some otherwise, many Western nations including the US and UK would assist Australia meaningfully if we were being invaded unless they themselves were being invaded or indeed if any of them were the invading forces. ;)

Sydney Fan seems the US is hell bent on bombing any country who has a large muslim population trying to wipe out a particular religion where have I heard that happening before could it have been in the early 40's?

Yeah, it's pretty scary stuff. The us vs. them mentality, that's what the terrorists want and the US hasn't been disappointing them too much lately.

We have a huge Muslim population here are they going to bomb us too if we dont get rid of them why cant they work out it is a minority of lunatics & it is hard to find them & bring them to justice they should know they still havent caught Bin Laden yet have they?

i reckon he is dead.

btw, has anyone seen the FBI web-site with Bin Laden as their number 1 most wanted person.

It's one of the more strange things as i see, as on the web-page it has a reward for his capture and i'm thinking to myself "well it's not as your going to see him walking down the middle of the road is it" if you get what i mean. Who's gonna be able to capture him?? he probably has only been seen by a handful of people in the past few years i would think.

I reckon we should continue to have the US bomb **** out of everyone, because they'd be sure to kill some of the guilty.

It's best if the whole world ends up in conflagration.

The three people who are left on the planet will be able to say, "I told you so."

And they won't be at all lonely or devoid of conversation topics. It will definitely be 'interesting times' to live in.

Food might be a problem.

The lack of markets for commodities would make the New York Stock Exchange another place which was deserted, but the three people who are left behind would be the richest people on the planet.

Whom would they tell?

Funnily enough, I saw that as well. Every now and then when i've been under the pump at uni, I seriously consider outfitting a mercenary unit, and heading off to try and capture him :) :)

REWARD

The Rewards For Justice Program, United States Department of State, is offering a reward of up to $25 million for information leading directly to the apprehension or conviction of Usama Bin Laden. An additional $2 million is being offered through a program developed and funded by the Airline Pilots Association and the Air Transport Association

Would come in handy......
