Playing anywhere outside Victoria in the practice matches is a joke its not like we don't have enough opposition to play practice games with in Victoria, let the interstate sides sort out there own practice games between each other, if there is one thing Carlton don't need it is to travel to Alice 2 weeks from the start of the season, after last weeks effort we should be playing at Princes Park and trying to lift membership in Melbourne not galavanting all over the country side like the ********ing Leyland brothers.
Another botched effort from the AFL and a limp wristed Ian Collins, we would be better off playing against the Bullants than travelling to woop woop. Carlton Supporters don't get any coverage of the match at all so anyone thinking about signing up can't even listen to it on the radio, another marketing opportunity to sign up more members goes begging thanks to the incompetence of the Carlton heirarchy and there AFL bumbuddies.

That's a bit of a narrow view there Murphster. I think that you'll find that most, if not all Victorian clubs have to travel this time of year. My only probelm with us travelling to Alice Springs is that we also have to travel to Perth in a months time to play Fremantle in round 2.

Rather than where the footy club plays is almost irrelevant, what would have been better would have been if the club had put up a better showing last week against Port. This would have had a much greater impact on membership, instead of where the footy club plays.

I think the game against Port was a very good opportunity for the club to put up a good showing and sell some hope and memberships.
An opportunity missed and now the club is under pressure and the spotlight is on a few.

10 to 15% down on membership is something like 2000 to 3000 and thats a fair whack. Now after the Port game the flow on as compared to last year and us winning the NAB cup means that gap will get wider.

Not good news.

The bright news is that we are apparently getting given 50 million dollars according to Greg Denham. Between he and Patrick Smith they would struggle to change a light bulb but lets hope they keep writing those insightful articles.

St Kilda played last week in Perth, next week in Newcastle and then Perth again round one.

You can hardly complain as you're getting off lightly.

The press this week and releasing the annual report so close to the season will effect memberships more than playing in Alice.

That's true, but there is time yet. I myself know of one person who has overlooked paying his membership :)o  ), but that will be rectified next week. ;)

Re the initial post - as JD pointed out, St Kilda are on the road too. In fact most or all of the clubs travel for practice matches at this time of the year, so I don't see the drama. It certainly isn't the fault of the scheduling that the club largely missed out on a golden opportunity to sell memberships last weekend.

And there is a positive side to it as well, in that the club this weekend has a chance to sell memberships in a part of the country where it doesn't normally get to.

We're better off playing up in NT than Victoria, especially the way we are playing.

With any luck we will get off lightly from the media if we get flogged.

We'll just have to take our medicine with this one. As Mojo said, we blew it....

The AFL have a goal of bringing football to regional towns. It affects everyone. Besides, we had a pretty sweet draw last year... You win some, you lose some.

No Victorian club should travel pre season, what we don't have enough regional areas in Victoria? give me a break, how many members will we sign up in Alice considering we probably won't travel there again in the next 5 years, what 5, 6 maybe, its a joke. Now we beat the Eagles and have nothing to show for it, whereas if we played in Victoria supporters would have been able to see the game and gain some hope for the season ahead instead we got no coverage what so ever and a half a paragraph in the Herald Sun with no scores, goalkickers, best players nada, big boost for the club that is, if Collins and his cronies are waiting for the AFL or the media to spruik the club they will be waiting a while, the only way we would get a write up from the media is if we got belted by 100 points or something else negative.
Not all supporters follow the club as closely as we do and therefore only ever get the negative's pumped out by the media which is why we, more than anyone, need to play pre-season games in Victoria where our largest supporter base is. I am all for building the Competition in rural areas but at the moment Carlton needs to do what is right for Carlton and not worry about the rest of the competition that was my point, i wasn't whinging that just Carlton was hard done by but we need all the help we can get and a win of any kind at home would have been a boost to membership and support. Anyone who thinks what happened to Fitzroy couldn't happen to Carlton better think again our situation is dire and our President does nothing but bag us in the media, with all the negatives going around at the moment one thing we needed was a positive and the players got us that but most Carlton supporters will never know it.:p

The scheduling of NAB Regional Challenge games is totally controlled by the AFL. All clubs are at the mercy of this type of scheduling. How do you think the Sydney v Richmond game ended up at Carrara this weekend? I doubt either club's presidents would have got together with the AFL to achieve this outcome.

As has already been said in this thread, an opportunity to boost memberships was lost last weekend by the insipid performance of the players, that's nothing to do with Collo.

What so because we lost the opportunity last week we should just scrap our membership drive and hope for the best, that is more reason to be playing in Victoria not less. As for all clubs being at the mercy of the scheduling as i said earlier all Victorian clubs should be lobbying the AFL about playing interstate in practice games, all of them are complaining about it and are ********ed off because they have to travel yet nothing changes, with the number of clubs in Victoria none of us should have to travel outside Victoria in practice games. And with Carltons current position yes Collo should be the first one banging on the AFL's door and leading the charge for change so just because he does nothing does not make him free of blame, he has to be proactive or we will die a slow death. Please read my posts properly before criticising there content.;)

I was just trying to put a positive slant on it for you. :)
