Many people thought we couldn't win it. They said it was out of our reach. But after today's stunning performance, the saints have shown that wooden spoon number 27 is not beyond reach.

If we play like that for the rest of the year, it is a certainty.

Thinking back to last year, I don't think I bagged the club much at all. I was disappointed, but not disgusted.

Not any more!

Today's performance was one of the worst performances I have seen for many years. No disrespect intended towards West Coast but we lost to a side that will more than likely win the wooden spoon, apart from St Kilda on today's effort.

Why many of us have to sit through insipid, pathetic, disgraceful performances like that I don't know.

For goodness sake guys, it is not rocket science. When a player has 4 guys on him, kick it to someone else. When a player is dropping back to defence, do not just blaze away and turn the ball over. Defenders, punch the ball!

When the total marks of Hamill, Loewe, Hall, Everitt and Gehrig are less than that of Troy Wilson, you have to worry.

Troy who???

A 29 year old recruited by the eagles as an insurance policy against the possiblity of Scott Cummings having an extended period on the sidelines.

When the backline of a side is represented by a group of players of which have never been backman before in their careers, you have to worry.

When Aussie Jones is your best player to half time, you have to worry!

(He was one of the few bright spots for the day)

What were the positives? Perhaps the fact that if we had played any other side in the competition, we may have lost by 20 goals.

Thank goodness we are playing Port Adelaide away next week, quite frankly I'm happy I won't have to witness a belting.

Maybe I will calm down later in the week. Perhaps we have hit rock bottom and this will be the turning point in our season. I just haven't been this pissed off over the performance of the club for a very long time.

Note :- I guess I should probably point out that I'm not chucking in the towel. Once a sainter, always a sainter. I just needed to get that off my chest.

I agree with almost all you said, the only difference is that I spent most of last year disgusted as well.
Don't forget some of the mighty efforts then, such as against Adelaide at Colonial we lost by 4 goals 16.
Blight said in his press conference that we had no 4 quarter player, I'd go as far as even no body played well for 3 quarters. even Harvey & Burke were very quiet today, not withstanding Harve's 3 goals in the last 1/4.
The only saving grace was that we were within a goal at the 20 minute mark of the last quarter. If we pulled it out , it would have been the biggest steal, since well, the Eagles snuck a draw in the same round at the same place last year. I still don't rate the Eagles, nothing more than a bottom 4 side, but on today's performance so are we. I live in hope we can turn it around, we keep thinking about 97 and the fact that we were 1-5 and ended up in the GF, but my patience is running low.

Sounds like a good idea Shinboners.

You better watch it though, I've heard this losing disease is quite contagious.

HTBS,

I agree with you. I suppose the reason why I said I was more disappointed than disgusted last year was because it became apparent so early in the season last year that we were going to have a poor year, the losses were more or less expected.

Honestly, we couldn't play any worse than today could we?

The 1 - 4 record of 1997 is what I'm going to put my faith in as well.

gocatsgo,

Hmmmm, that was nice and catty. I suppose the next thing you'll do is whip out the handbag and swing it around.

Ah, you can't take gocatsgo seriously. After all, last season gocatsgo blasted geelong4eva for slagging off (I think it was) Houlihan before Houlihan had one of his rare good games. The only problem was that g4e found a post where gocatsgo had also slagged off the same player.

Imagine being tripped up by geelong4eva....oh, the embarassment.

I'm struggling to come up with somebody who actually won his position convincingly today, plenty of cameos but no consistent 4 quarter player. I also thought Blight chose today to make some points, Everitt was off the ground a fair bit when we were struggling, previously he would have been left to rest at Full Forward.
The hopeful side of me (which admittedly gets plenty of practice) says that, despite all that we could have won the bloody game, if some breaks went our way in the last 1/4. The goal to put them 2 goals up deflated us, and 2 more came quickly. I am waiting for Blight to put a public rocket up someone, until this happens I fear same old same old.

Now Shinners, that was a bit un-called for bringing something that happened 12 months ago.

It seems to me that you obviously feel you have nothing to look forward to in the future so you are happy to bring up past incidents to hang your hat on.

By the way, Don't use my name in the same breath of G4E ever again.

It's quite ironic getting that bit of advice from a Geelong fan. Especially one who still hasn't gotten over Colbert leaving them.....ooohhhh, now let me think....24 months ago.

Just a little embarassing.

They say saints fans are fickle. Have a listen to the comments Geelong fans make towards Mensch and Burns next week. They were the amongst the best few players on the ground last week yet their supporters were still giving them shit.

gocatsgo,

It was your reference to St Kilda's past that prompted this in the first place.

HTBS,

I'm at a loss. Aussie had a good first half and I thought Callaghan was very good. Lawrence looked OK in his first game and will get better when left on the ground for 4 quarters.

By harping on about our performance, we are giving West Coast no credit at all. But in all seriousness, their supporters had a live telecast of the game and if they can't see how poor both teams were, they were watching a different game.

You're right about the similarity between today and last year against the crows. We almost stole that match before throwing in the towel.

Port Adelaide next week and Carlton the week after. I'm still fired up about going to Optus Oval.

I have to admit I didn't see the game but I was not surprised that the Eagles won. We are quietly confident over here of a slow and steady resurgance. Troy Wilson is not unknown in the West, he has stood out in the WAFL for the last 2 years at least.

Maybe the Eagles weren't that bad and maybe the Saints need a few weeks to get their new coach and players into line.

How did Fraser Gehring play?

Now we go back 24 months,

We really are clutching at straws now aren't we.

After this week, what's past is past.

As Paul Couch said last week - Colbert leaving is the best thing that could have happened to Geelong.

Because they ahve only improved since and North have been struck by what is commonly referred to as 'The Colbert Curse'.

To be truthful, the only other club apart from your own that I wish the Colbert curse on is Carlton. But hey, you'll do!!!

Are you sure about this? I'm sure that you and your fellow Geelong fans have started at least half a dozen topics on bigfooty about Colbert. To be truthful, I don't think you guys will ever get over it....you're too bitter, too small minded, you'll never really let go. You're too keen to point out why you've won out of the deal, it's like you need to convince yourselves and the rest of the world that it was all planned that way, that you knew that you could finish up with the better part of the deal. You forget that your coach, your president, and all the players begged Colbert to stay. In the end, you really haven't gotten over the rejection.

Oh, and Paul Couch. Brownlow medallist and three time Grand Final choker. Interesting how no Geelong fan has mentioned the comments of Wayne Carey. You know the ones, where Carey said that one of the reasons why Colbert left was because he didn't get the support of those he respected (Couch, and we can assume, the other senior players like Hocking, Stoneham etc.) when he was named captain. Yep, lot's of club unity there....no egos from those senior cat players hey?

In the end though, your Colbert bitterness is a shame. It really is. You have a good young side that plays attractive football with a bit of grunt to it. But as someone on the North board pointed out, there's been more chat from you guys about Colbert than there has been about your own football team. How sad and pathetic is that?

The wheels are falling off.........

The problem is you think to or three players were going to make a huge improve along with your coach. StKilda have no discipline and no backline.

Barry Hall at full back.......please get serious

You let a 29yr old WAFL player kick 7 goals. What are you going to do when you play Essendon or other teams with a decent full forward.

Its a long year and things may change but at this stage i would be worried.

Why can't you sainters give credit where credit is due. The Eagles should have been six goals up at half time but for three soft 50m penalties that gifted goals. Your big guys were murdered in the ruck, Gehrig was pathetic, Hamill was hopeless, Harvey and Burke hardly had a kick due to the Eagles midfield dominance. Ozzie Jones was the only player to stand up.
Against poorer sides you will probably get a few wins but the EAGLES are playing as top 8 contenders since the end of the first half against Sydney. Sydney are top four material and the Eagles were on top of them in the second half and played well today.
As I say, give credit where credit is due.

And here's a joke ..................

Why did Coldbutt need respect from Paul Couch ?
Couch wasn't even at the club at the time Coldbutt was appointed captain.Did he need respect from Ian & Bruce Nankervis,Brian Peake,Polly Farmer .........etc....So did Coldbutt really say this or was Wayncry just making things up ?

"FIGHTING WITH ALL OUR MIGHT"

I think to many expectations have been placed on the Saints this year. When I think of their recruits they got, they are not super stars. Personally, I think Gehrig is way overrated, Hamill is yet to prove himself without Whitnall, Lawrence is a good player but no superstar, Voss could not even get a game in Brisbane and Capuano is a good ruckman, but no Jeff White or Steven King. Blight is a great coach but no miracle worker.

Sainter - your full of shit. There was a reason the Saints played badly today and that reason is the West Coast Eagles. We destroyed you and should have won by a lot more. I felt confident for the whole game barring a brief 5 minute period in the last quarter that we would win. And win we did. Hamill was useless, Loewe went missing and lowered his colours by quarter time to Jakovich. Ash, Matera and Wirrpunda were dominant with there run out of defence and our forward line of Wilson (who embarassed 4 of your players
biggrin.gif
) Ph Matera Merenda and Williams was too strong. Everitt was belted in the ruck and was dragged on many occasions. Face it Sainter you are still the reigning wooden spooners and just cos you win one game you think everything has turned around. WRONG. Everyone says you were favourites going in .. hahahahahahahah We embarrassed your excuse of a football team.

So enough with the Eagle bashing and admit defeat like a man. You were beaten by a better side who will be better than you all year. Good luck for the spoon ... again.

You poor deluded souls.
Yes you beat us, and were better on the day. Congratulations.

However if you think beating StKilda in that sort of form has the rest of the competition worried , you've got to be kidding yourselves.

I saw Geelong last week beat us too, and rate them so much higher it isn't funny. We played quite well against them and they killed us in the 2nd half. We played crap yesterday, and were within a goal with 5 minutes to go.

Enjoy it lads, I fear on yesterday's game there is not much there for either of us.

I will not give up on the Saints just yet!
Sure yesterday was disappointing but the West Coast played well when it counted.Their experienced players are used to winning.

Some of the players such as Hall and Thompson have not accepted positional changes. The younger players are just too inexperienced.Gehrig and Lawrence are returning from long term injuries and have`nt had the ideal preseason preparation.

I would like to see how they perform against Port Adelaide next week and expect an improvement.
