AFL Getting full time professionals would be a start.....

The goal umpires head is dead level with the ball in the photo maybe he thought (incorrectly) that he was
straddling the line at the time. The snicko calls annoy me because the mike clearly registers residual
noise Players will learn to scuff the post as the ball passes closely, oh hang on Barry we have a spike

They knew within 15 seconds it was a goal, why not stop play, count the goal and go back to the centre?

Nobody would ever have thought an umpire would miss that easy a decision.

And to be fair he shouldn't have.

I thought the boundary umpires could also help out with these calls, the one nearest to that side of play should have been able to see it was over the line.

Mitch Brown who was in the goal square didn't have as good an angle as either of the the two umps on the line and he stopped playing and signaled a goal.

But doubt from who? If the umpire had doubt he would have used the system, but he obviously didn't have doubt so he didn't use it. Now he was wrong, but what is the solution?

If the umpire doesn't have doubt then the system doesn't get used. Do we just use the system every single time the ball gets close to the goal line and go to a review regardless of what the umpire thinks? Do we get rid of the umpires and only use the electronic system?

Lol you had me until you trailed off into I don't know where at the end there.

Two goal umpires is probably the way to go. The only issue might be the ability to do this in the state leagues in terms of available goal umpires as you'd be doubling the amount you need overnight.

And you'd have to do it for state leagues because that's where the umps train and learn the craft.

For an obvious goal scored like in this case, they should just add the points onto the score once its been confirmed. The game can just continue on anyway as it went. Its probably the fairest outcome. Something to consider for next year.

This would seem to be the fairest outcome, there will still be outrage but at least the team that kicked a goal also scored a goal.

It was an absolute howler, that like most goal umpiring errors was caused by an umpire in the wrong spot. He was obviously caught out and didn’t get into the right position. Probably a local getting a trial and he shouldn’t be back next week let alone next season.

Nearly every single error made on the line by a goal umpire is the same as this, they are not perfectly straddling the line so therefore they think it’s in play because the ball is in front of them.

The NHL has a mechanism for these goal line reviews - all plays where the puck is close to the goal line are reviewed while play is in progress. If a puck does cross the goal line but is missed by the officials, the goal horn will sound during play, the referees stop the game (can be minutes later) and the goal is awarded.

The AFL could easily do the same thing - if a score is missed as it was at Metricon, tell the field umpires via their earpieces during play so that they can stop the game and award the goal or point.

The idea that such a blatant and crucial error should stand on the basis that there may be a few more seconds of play before a stoppage just seems very odd.

Perhaps the bunker system being introduced would be given authority to effect an immediate overrule and play simply stops once the decision is corrected? I don't know the exact answer, but if it's very clearly shown to be a goal, then it needs to stand.

The video umpire needs to be totally fixated on the live goal line footage in these situations. In this situation with deciding if the ball is still in play, it should be such a straight forward decision making process every time. If the video umpire instantly thinks it is a goal when he watches it live, he should have to immediately stop the game, then conduct a thorough review once play stops. If his immediate thought is that it’s not a goal, then it’s play on with no review.
