Read in the paper those morons from w***er hill want to introduce a grandfather-grandson rule for those players who were legendes 50 or so years ago. This stems from the grandson of old man Coleman, who is 15 and looking quite a prospect. This is another example of essendon pettiness and selfiness. Going by that rule, Geelong can reclaim Matty Priums, as he is a descendant of Reg Hickey. I think Essendon are worried they do not have any good young kids in the reserves, so they need another special ******* assistance advantage to keep them competetive in 3 or so years time.

I heard that your mum commmitted suicide the minute she gave birth to you JubJub. Do you care to elaborate ?

With Primus, Geelong didnt even want him and let him go to Fitzroy much to the chagrin of Bobby Davis. That's the difference. Essendon get their man, Geelong let the good ones go. How about Tim Clarke? You cant even grab the ones you are entitled to!!!!!!!

Can you let us know what paper the article was in, I would be interested in having a look at it.

Larry, Geelong offered him a chance but Tim Clarke did not want to play for the same club as his brother and his father. Simple - he didn't want to handle the pressure, and playing in Geelong can be suffocating i must admit. Besides we've got enough young midfielders as it is, he wouldn't get a game wiht Geelong at the moment anyway. And besides Ramanaskaus, which young player has come good at Essendon - I'll tell ya - NONE
At least Geelong, with all their faults, draft mainly good young solid young players, with the exception of the ******* Cameron Ling

It was in last sunday's age. I think you may find a link at www.realfooty.com.au because they usually put up articles from teh victorian age on there. I doubt if you will be able to find a copy of last sunday's age in Perth by now, but i could wrong

Dons hatch grand plan to snare a Coleman

By JAKE NIALL

ESSENDON, keen to snare a descendant of the great John Coleman, has called for the introduction of a grandfather-grandson rule.
The Bombers have formally asked the AFL to consider a ``limited'' grandfather rule that would apply to the grandsons of AFL Hall of Fame members such as Coleman, Dick Reynolds, Haydn Bunton, Bob Skilton and Gordon Coventry.

It is believed that in framing their unusual request, the Bombers have their eyes on 15-year-old Chris Goullet, whose mother is the daughter of Coleman, the club's most adored former champion. Goullet, a Xavier College student, is a promising onballer who could be drafted in 2003.

Essendon has included its unusual grandfather proposal in its submission to the AFL's working party on the draft.

In its submission, the club said the AFL should ``add a grandfather-grandson rule to further nurture the relationship between clubs and former players''.

Essendon said the rule should be limited to grandsons of AFL Hall of Fame inductees. It said this group may include names such as ``Farmer, Coventry, Reynolds, Coleman, Kerley, Bunton.''

The submission said a limited grand-father rule would ``no doubt be a great promotion for the game''.

It is believed that Reynolds, who ranks alongside Coleman as Essendon's most revered former player and coach, also has a promising grandson in his early teens.

Coleman had the distinction of hav-ing the AFL's medal for the leading goalkicker named in his honor. He played 98 games and booted 537 goals for the Dons in a spectacular and all-too-brief career.

Coleman was the most popular and charismatic player of his era, his mys-tique enhanced by premature retire-ment in 1954 because of a knee injury. He furthered his legend by coaching Essendon to premierships in 1962 and 1965. Coleman died in 1973.

Essendon's proposal is perhaps the most left-field of the clubs' submissions to the AFL on the father-son rule, which is being reviewed as part of the AFL's review of the entire national draft.

Some clubs have argued for the abolition of the father-son rule, while others have made suggestions about how it may be reformed.

Sandie

The article as posted by G4E is correct as I read it in one of the newspapers on the weekend.

As good as it would be to see John Coleman's grandson line up for the Bombers, I can't see the Bombers getting their idea up and running though (there has been talk of axing the father-son rule....to my mind, it would be a huge shame), so the kid will have to take his chances in the draft (if he gets that far).

Damn
Why couldn't he have been brought up in Canberra like Hirdy, might have escaped peoples notice.

You can add The Johnsons there as well, Blumfield

I read that article on the weekend too, but passed it off as an another April Fools joke.

no good kids come to essendon???
other than the several mentioned above

dont forget hird, mercuri, alessio, moorcroft, wallis, barnes, long, fletcher, misiti, etc all came to essendon as kids

hille, henneman, jacobs, mcveigh, mcalister, forster knight, mcgrath have all been very impressive at times

and the 6 draft picks this year, davis, davies, richards, bullen, bannister and hunt are all very impressive

also some of the top up and rookie players, ken hall, damian uze, damien peverill, david johnson, adam switala etc have all shown great form

once again G4E proving he has no comprehension what so ever of afl football

Sorry buddy but you're wrong.
Tim Clarke said on tuesday night (at the Hawthorn Social Club at Harf-An-Hour) that Geelong never showed any interest in him. He also said that another reason that he didnt want to go to Geelong was because he and his brother never got along so it would be awkward

Seriously, though. The father-son should be scrapped because it discriminates against clubs that either did not exist a generation ago or were playing in a competition other than the V.F.L.

The grandfather-grandson rule just takes the father-son rule a bit further. And therefore exacerbates the injustice.

The idea should be placed in the WPB file forthwith.

If it was an April Fool's joke, I guess it was mildly funny.
