um I like the current one, and better than any one I can conceive myself, more than a stupid green and gold with aboriginal flag in corner for example

If we were to ever change the flag, it would only happen when Australia votes to become a republic and that's being quite reasonable about it.

If we do become a republic, which I have to say is a 50/50 bet even now, then there options for which the flag could look like.

Many would suggest the Eureka Flag, given its historical context to the country and its current use by the union movement, is one choice. Others would say a flag bearing both the Aboriginal Flag and the Southern Cross, would also be a justifiable choice.

But, as I said before, we must hold off on this UNTIL the country decides to become a republic..AND NOT BEFORE.

The current flag is okay I guess, I just had a look at the Eureka Flag, its actually looks rather good, so something like that, with some small changes and I might be all for it.

Ok please let me know why we would put the aboriginal flag on the national flag ??

if we were to have a new flag surely we could then have 1 national flag to represent the whole country ??

I would be against any flag change if it had the aboriginal flag in it as it would a ******** poor attempt to represent the country as 1 country same goes for the eureka flag - doesnt represent everyone !

could we just go with a wattle outline ALA canada?? or just the southern cross ?

******** that disgusting piece of rag they call our flag - with that dirty, rabid symbol of imperialism in the corner of a country that has done more to destroy the world's culture than any other.

******** the flag, it represents nothing I aspire to or desire.

Why have a ********ing flag anyway? For the Olympics? Who gives a bollocks about that? I'd rather have a Stalinist Russian flag then the screw up we have now.

Get it out of my sight!

well i wasnt aguing to keep the current one was I !!

however people have to deal with the fact that England lets say "colonised" Australia so their being a union jack represents their service to the country (while being anti british is a fashionable as being anti american) they did do a lot for this country (ok bad farming practices and sending all their drunk nobles dont count)

but the current flag does mena alot to war veterans I suppose

But until someone comes up with something better we are stuck with it

and I agree no animals on the flag I only suggested the Wattle out of desperation !! I am quite fond of the southern cross however ? maybe top hand corner on an all blue flag ?

P.S no to green and gold flag - its great for sport but it would make us look like a 80's discount store - tacky

There's a lot wrong with the current flag, inclueding it's the wrong Union Jack for one thing. And i cant understand how WWI veterans remember it as the present flag came into use after that war,or were they all imagining it?.

Monarchists are just pretending to care what they think, and they're speaking for them.

Not that I'm doubting you but care to explain. I've got my Grandfathers WW2 uniform & badges & from memory (can't check it now) its the same flag.
I have no allegiance to England but I'm not joining the anti-England trend either (I didn't know there was a trend) but the flag is ours like it or hate it. I can't imagine that changing it could achieve anything.

EDIT: Sorry, just re-read & you stated WW1 not 2. Still I'm interested to hear how & if you now why it was changed.

In 1901 the new Federal Government organised a competition for a new flag - one for "official" or Government use, and one for the "merchant" service (i.e. citizens at sea). The judging and approval process were such that only a British Ensign with a badge representative of Australia was likely to be a winner. The winning design for the merchant flag was based on the British Red Ensign, and the winning design for the official Government flag was based on the British Blue Ensign.

For many years there was considerable misunderstanding in Australia and in other countries with regard to the use of the Australian flags. During World War II, Prime Minister Menzies issued a directive that there should be no restriction on the flying of the "Commonwealth Blue Ensign", and Prime Minister Chifley gave his support to that view in 1947. In 1953, by means of a Commonwealth Act of Parliament - the Flags Act 1953 - the "British Blue Ensign" was proclaimed the national flag. Only since then has it had seniority over the Union Jack.

If you've driven up Elizabeth St. in Melbourne and checked out the HUGE Eureka flag , it does look good.. esp. without the Jack. I could go with that.
