Not that I'm doubting you but care to explain. I've got my Grandfathers WW2 uniform & badges & from memory (can't check it now) its the same flag.

EDIT: Sorry, just re-read & you stated WW1 not 2. Still I'm interested to hear how & if you now why it was changed.
From memory,it was a red Union Jack till the '30s.The White one is the Merchant Navy Flag.No it would have to be Blue,Naval Ensign.

Sorry i gave the wrong Ensigns, which someone else corrected But i'm pretty sure about the veterans 'memory'of the flag is wrong.Even people like Bruce Ruxton have admitted to that, about 5 years ago.

Change our flag and I'd be tempted to pick up arms.

Good thing is that it will never happen because to change the flag as I understand it a national plebiscite must be held with over 75% voting for change. It was the only good thing Beazley ever did making sure that would happen. Given the Australian flag is more popular than ever I can't see it happening during my lifetime.

The red and white bit down the bottom clearly represent the Japanese flag, slowly rising and engulfing the Australian one :)

Just a slight diversion

Few schools in pole position
''Only 123 schools had applied for up to $1500 to buy a flagpole so they can access $31 billion in federal funding, a Senate hearing in Canberra was told yesterday. The Prime Minister, John Howard, said last month that no school would receive money unless it had "a functioning flagpole" and flew the Australian flag. Department of Education, Science and Training officers said inspectors would not be sent to check on schools.''

Crocidileman..did you jump up and down about this one? Isnt this Howard imposing his economic will to make people do something? A teacher would have particular interest in been told to beg and grovel for a few extra dollars I would have thought.

Hmmm Inspectors WONT be sent to check on schools? Sounds like the Mulan conditions to me
