UM no, I am a lowly paid worker, where the hell did you get the idea I run a business, OK, I pretty much run my boss' business, but that isn't reflected in my pay. :
(
I go to a bank nearly everyday during the week, to deposit cheques from our clients, go every friday because that's the day I cash my pay cheque
I inferred from the ''our'' that you did..wrong again

OH OK, I see where you misread it, by our clients I meant the company's clients, mind you, with all the sick days & holidays my boss takes, I basically run the company, yet he's the one who makes all the money. :(

Bring in socialism I say. :D

NO..........Australians died fighting for that flag.

They fought for our freedom, not a scrap of rag from the poms.

Change the flag, time to get rid of the poms who think they own Australia.

But that flag is a symbol of our country.

For all the talk on the subject I'm still yet to hear any advantages in changing. Its exactly the same with the republic debate. I would think that the vast majority of Australians see us as independant from England & have no alliegence to the monachy but the republic movement failed to point out any reasons to change. Changing the head of state from one who's picked by the elected PM & simply rubber stamped by the Queen to a President who may or may not be elected (did they ever decide?) didn't seem to have any advantage to me.

Yes it is. Whatever the flag is, at any point, it will symbolise the nation, by definition. Do you have a point?
Symbolise the nation eh??

Well how about our biggest source of immigrants, our language, our justice system, our parliamentary system, our colonial history, our military history etc etc.

The Union Jack symbolises all that the aboriginal flag and others dont.

The British are famous for their disrespect for their “colonials”. So by keeping their flag on ours, we are saying that we do not deserve respect.

drawing a long bow there.

Simply indicates which country founded ours.

No big deal. So long as we dont go with some sort of "cutesy" animal, aboriginal design, Or bollocksy green and gold style, i am happy

How about if we just kept the flag as it is, with the southern cross (eureka will never get in as it comes across as a very paty-partizan flag) and the Union Jack.

BUT

Take away the red white and blue of the Jack, and replace with the Black, yellow and red of the Aboriginal flag. That way it recognises our unquestionably british heritage, and our rising awareness of the significance of the INdigenous heritage of the land?

Crikey I'm on form today.

FYI I can't stay away - my new resolution is to only post one thought per thread, and avoid getting into argument and debate, as that sucks the time out. AND it is just a time issue, I don;t mid the debates at all:)

But then it is no longer the unionjack - thus symbolising nothing about our heritage.

Just a slight diversion

Few schools in pole position
''Only 123 schools had applied for up to $1500 to buy a flagpole so they can access $31 billion in federal funding, a Senate hearing in Canberra was told yesterday. The Prime Minister, John Howard, said last month that no school would receive money unless it had "a functioning flagpole" and flew the Australian flag. Department of Education, Science and Training officers said inspectors would not be sent to check on schools.''

Crocidileman..did you jump up and down about this one? Isnt this Howard imposing his economic will to make people do something? A teacher would have particular interest in been told to beg and grovel for a few extra dollars I would have thought.

Hmmm Inspectors WONT be sent to check on schools? Sounds like the Mulan conditions to me
Does that mean they split the $31billion between 123 schools ?

In that case let me know where their zones are, I'll move there tomorrow

On my earlier idea - how about half the jack is traditional, and hald is Aboriginal colours? I think this would be quite a striking, yet subtle, difference. regardles what people say, you would have to be blind freddy to not realise it was the union jack.

I wish I was a photo edit guru and I'd make one up and post it!!

Yes yes Otaku, we all know you don't want to change the flag, and that no design would please you.

How do you justify the colours?
Don't really. I just think its quite a striking design (sort of in the way the Canadian flag stands out and is immediately identifiable). The symbolism of the Southern Cross is IMO more important as we've been using it as a symbol for a long time. However the colours are also those that exist on the current flag if you take away the U.J., thus there is a link to the existing flag in both design and colour.

I don't like the idea of using the Aboriginal flag as part of the Australian flag - for one the original designer disapproved of that - something to do with disenfranchising those it was intended to stand for. I also don't really like that colour combination.

I just don't think the Union Jack is really appropriate given large parts of the population don't have British ancestry, while the Aboriginal flag would also be divisive for similar reasons.

I would like to see a flag that includes the Federation star though, as that is a good reference to Australia as a federation of states.
