most people chop and change on the significance of the Ansett Cup. It usually goes that if your side wins it was a great win and a sign of a great year ahead. If you club loses then its only the Ansett Cup and it doesn't really mean anything anyway.

Most supporters manage to hold both these views sometimes in the space of 8 days.

I think we should go out on a limb.

Declare now whether it means anything or not. If you say it is significant then you have legitimate braging rights when your side wins (over other supporters who also think it is significant)...but must cop it sweet when they lose...and visa versa.

Me - Insignificant. Too many 2nd rate players playing, and experimentation. Unless Port make the final. I think the final is usually a full on match and teams go full bore to win.

See....I try to be decisive and still I hold both views....

well....will you brag if you win ?

I hate it - its just so stupid that we have to run around in this truly idiotic tournament when we could start the season proper earlier and leave more time for an extended (read : fairer for ALL) draw.

Couldn't give a toss if my club wins it or not

Try this simple test - after the 5th round of the h&A season, will you remember who won the AC ?

I doubt it

Its a big fat stupid waste of space and seems to serve no other purpose except to bring in more sponsorship dollars.

The fact that this tournament commands more prizemoney than the hardest prize to win in the entire game (the Minor Premiership) is an absolute bloody disgrace.

cheers

For me it is significant....not in how my team will or won't perform.......but the chance to see footy again.....and know that the season proper is on the way!

I'll put it this way, I couldn't care less if we win or lose. The only worry I have is injuries.

I wish that my club had won so many premierships that I could afford to become Blase about them. While I agree with BSA that we'd be better of starting the season early and fixing up the inequalities in the draw, I think that we are stuck with the pre-season comp.(kinda like limited overs cricket). Put me down for bragging rights. GO SCRAGGERS.

Its a scam by the AFL and clubs.
The AFL want it cause they are using us footy starved footy supporters as a way of making money(what else is new)
The club corporates want it gives them a chance to sell its product, depending of course if the club is successful or not.

WIN WIN WIN!

I look forward to the Ansett Cup each year, mainly because I have been hanging out for the footy to return and it is great to see the new players make their debuts.

However, after last years disgraceful season, I am going to savour every single win. And if that happens to be an Ansett Cup win, so be it!

In a perfect world, I think the Ansett Cup should be scrapped in order to have an even 30 game season but that won't happen.

The 2001 season and the next few seasons are crucial for the future of the St Kilda Football Club and I can think of no better way than a strong Ansett Cup campaign.

The ansett cup doesn't mean stuff all.The only thing i like about it is teams play at non AFL venues-like in Darwin and Cairns.I thnik the more we spread the game the better of we will be.

Its nothing too me, means shit all.

Ansett Cup is to trail players out in diff positions etc.. before the start of the main Home And Away season.

Instead of clubs playing practice matches the Afl use a tornament style comp, which they run and try and get more money from Crowd attendaces. This season I will only get too see 1 Ansett Cup free of charge with my membership.

Ansett Cup grand final is good for the fans though I have too say, Because that Grand Final is for the real for fans of there clubs that are the bloodline of keeping A.F.L football alive.

If only Afl Grand Final tickets were as easy as getting Ansett Cup Grand Final Tickets.

Really though we dont need Ansett Cup and it doesnt mean anything for me except seeing my side thats it.

To be honest, it's a premeirship up for grabs, and if you can win it it adds to the history of your club. Essendon has won 6 Ansett Cups (equal with the Hawks) and it would be great for the club to take the lead.

it's a premiership, and it's a chance to add a trophy to the cabinet. If you look at past winners it doesn't got to a poor team. Some of the early round matches can be a bit of a joke, but the Grand Final itself, often gets over 70,000 pepole, so the public seem to endorse the Ansett Cup Grand Final !

well either way i am farked... 3 of my 4 teams in the same group

The competition is a right load of CRAP..............................................but.......I can't say I won't enjoy seeing a bit of footy again. It seems so long.....................so, I'll enjoy it but ....................any silverware won will be a meaningless pieces of gunge not fit to stand aside two great flags.

Scrap it and get a fair league system as a priority.

And give the minor premiers a minor flag.

Do not follow where the path may lead.
Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Insignificant, we wont win anyway and if we do we do i wont be bragging. I will however be bragging if come september we are holding a bigger cup over our heads.

I can handle the fighting, its the affection i cant stand and i dont mind us talking just dont try to touch my hand.

The Ansett Cup is significant in that it gives players a chance to have a hit out before the season starts. And also gives young players a chance to experience football at top level.

The results aren't as important. Of course its good to know your team is looking solid during the Ansett Cup, but the results come second to the experience it gives rookies.

the ansett cup, i believe, is a good opportunity for us supporters to work our way back into watching the action. sure, in an ideal world we would play 30 home and away games, but the ansett cup is played to a TV-friendly schedule, the prizemoney is great and it gives the clubs an opportunity to get the players match-fit and to give opportunities to some of the younger and new players.

Having said that, it is not a significant competition, but it is always nice to win, however it won't be the end of the world if North don't take it out.

Depends on who you follow. Essendon seems to take it pretty seriously and hence I don't mind it as we seem to win a fair percentage of the comps. That said, I agree with BSA that it should be scrapped in favour of extending the season - possibly with a couple of weekly injury breaks throughout the year.

Collingwood supporters can't tell me they don't take it seriously - I still remember the outcry after that after the siren loss to erm... the Roos wasn't it? With Blight still on board?

PS. Dees01 - might want to fix your signature - Heritege not Heritage.

Provides the best workout for the players leading up to the real thing.

More importantly adds thousands of memberships.

Don't give a rat's.

Living in Sydney, it doesn't even give you the thrill of having the footy back.

There's bugger all TV coverage and the Swans this year are playing in Darwin, Adelaide and Canberra, so I won't be seeing it live either.

Piss it off and extend the season.
