Melbourne, (ESSENDON)
ok, this has probably been covered, but ive noticed its become a popular belief that the ansett cup should be scraped in order to extend the season

i think this is a bad idea, the ansett cup should stay

a) the ansett cup is an ideal way for clubs to gain finances in ways of prize money as well as boosting memberships for successful teams

b)great opportunity to trail players, either new players, or test other players from the list, with the home and away season you cant take this risk, each game is so important and you need your best 22 out there each week

c) match practise

anyone have any other ideas for or against

I say get rid of it!

30 round season i reackon!

Oh and does any body know if we have to reserve seats at colonial for the ansett cup!

I also look on it as a premiership to win. The Grand Final has often got in excess of 75,000 and it is a huge event.

It is one of the three "team" trophys that you can win for the year. It's another thing you can win to add to the trophy cabinet and add to the club's history. Since it's inception in 1977, Essendon have won it 6 times (equal with Hawthorn) and this is a source of great pride for the club.

Also, it's worth just as much as the big premiership in September in terms of money. The Ansett Cup delivers 125,000 to the winner, which is more than you get for winning the Grand Final in September.

Also, if you win the Ansett Cup, it would conservatively add 5,000 to your membership. A premiership in September would give a simlar increase the following season, but the Ansett Cup delivers that 5,000 extra members in that very season !

I look upon Essendon's last season as "the treble"

We won the Anseet Cup, the MClelland trophy and the premiership Cup - All three possible team trophys. Don't sneeze at the Ansett Cup Grand Final; it's a big event.

I like the current format, but I think it would benefit from being played during the day at the Melbourne clubs' suburban grounds, or even more in the country towns.
It's a little bit embarassing watching on television second rate football in front of a crowd of about 2000.

It is certainly match practice, but practice matches can be arranged pre-season anyway.
The standard is always much lower than that in the regular season so the winner is not the best club side in the competition.
Nicknamed the 'mickey mouse' cup by many.

Increasing games in regular season is fairer and we get to see more sides play. When you have a top side like Essendon around if they do not travel to the Eagles, dockers, lions etc (which is possible) denies the home supporters of seing the best side. (imagine a premier league soccer team being told that Man Utd were not playing them at home that season)
On the above basis the Ansett cup should be scrapped.

dees know one would expect to see a melb supporter at a ansett cup match after all its great weather for sailing the yacht, we dont expect them until prelim final day

and frodo the afl arent in favour of clubs playing practise matches, basically because they dont get any money from them

Walshy, the AFL would get increased revenue with the extra rounds in the regular season.

If the Eagles won the ansett cup

a) It would be of no significant value
b) Most Eagles supporters may watch the final but only give a halfhearted TV look at the other games

In fact with so much traveling in the regular season the Eagles will field very weak teams in away matches and protect the top players.

It must be a nightmare to do a cruciate in an Ansett cup match.

ps Ansett is owned by the Kiwis anyway

Do you speak for all Eagles supporters now? Geez, you as one is enough.

What sought of a name is Frodo? Oh i know why, your last name is Frog.

The Ansett Cup should stay. This should be the start of the season instead of arranged practice matches. The teams can blood new players plus have the chance to give their fans some optimism for the coming season. I also think the AFL needs to keep showing matches in country areas. This is a national game and we have to keep working on that rather than just cater for the existing fans only. I remember working in Mildura for a few weeks some years back. Coincidentally Carlton and Essendon were also playing a practice match there. It was a good turnout for a small population. The people didn't go to see one team or another, they went to see an example of the elite comp and some footy hero's they might ahve only seen on T.V.

I personally would like to see a 30 round comp too. Fairer and the more footy the better. I wouldn't support it at the expense of the Ansett cup though.

I love the Ansett Cup - FOR!!!!!!!!!!

LOL. I like the round-robin format too. HEY for a team that doesn't have many cups, that Ansett Cup is just another cup to aim for!!!!!!!! Hehehe

Tough one, on the one hand as pointed out, its the opportunity to add to the premiership cabinet. It can increase membership and give a good feeling to the winning clubs start to the season. The new round robin format is also a fairer way as everyone gets a reasonable shot at making the final.

Trouble is this fairness in the Ansett cup ISNT being extended to the home and away season. It is becoming farcial how a competition is now being run where the clubs ARE competing up to 30 plus matches (and finals for those that make it) per year already, yet we cannot have a fair and equal draw where everyone plays each other twice.

For that reason alone, id scrap the Ansett and extend the home and away. The games are already played anyway, why not have a H&A season to reflect it?

Get rid of it - its nothing but a stupid waste of time.

Why waste 5 weeks of the year when the time could be used in extending the regular H&A season so that the draw is fairer and more even for everyone.

Why do we put up with this daft little pisser of a pre-season comp that only the Melbourne clubs seem to take seriously anyway and which eats into the regular season so much that the regular draw is fatally comprimised, year in, year out.

If we dropped it we would have more time to devote to making the main draw fairer for everyone.

cheers

The Ansett Cup is not viewed as the real stuff.

I would much prefer to see it go in favour of an extended home and away season where each team played each other twice.

Much as I hate to say it, 16 teams are not viable long term - this will possible drop to 14 within the next decade.

Losing the Ansett Cup will mean that 26 rounds will be played with no additional lengthening of the overall season.

This is a hallucination and these faces are in a dream. A computer generated environment; a fantasy island you can do anything and not have to face the consequences.

If there was the choice between scrapping the Ansett Cup in favour of extending the H&A season, I am ALL for that!!!!!!!!!! The seasons tend to run by too fast as it is.

The round robin is good for match practice but in reality only one game (the one between the two strongest sides in each group) in the round robin is significant.

It's ashame to lose the knockout format - it has a certain appeal.

The only use of the Ansett Cup is to play games at grounds that are excluded from the real season.

The Ansett Cup is boring. I agree with the others that extending the true season to make it a fairer draw is worth far more than a pretend competition at the start of the season. Only the Vic clubs care, since they don't have to travel to each game.

And why risk top players getting injuries which could affect the real season? Why not scrap it and instead increase the cash incentive for clubs to win the premiership?
That would solve the income dilemma for the poorer clubs.

But the AFL won't scrap it since it's worth too much money to them.

Although scrapping the Ansett Cup and extending the season would allow each team to play each other once, a few things need to be considered.

Based on the current number of teams, you would have to play 30 rounds to allow each team to play each other twice. This would mean beginning the season two months early, in February. This can create a number of problems.

Firstly, February is the hottest month of the year. Regardless of how many extra interchange players teams are permitted, playing football during the day, in the middle of summer, borders on insanity. Obviously therefore, all games would need to played at night.

Secondly, and this continues on from my first point, there would not be enough venues to play at. Remember in early Feb, they are still playing cricket. Therefore, you can cancel the MCG, SCG and the Gabba. Optus is also out of business, because it has no lights. This leaves, Colonial, Football Park, Subiaco and possibly in the future, Stadium Australia, to play football at. The Ansett Cup, because it is not "the real thing" allows the AFL to play games in Darwin, Cairns, New Zealand etc. The AFL would not, in the normal course of events, consider playing games at these outposts during the H/A season.

In my opinion scrapping the Ansett Cup and commencing the season earlier, is not the panacia it is made out to be.
