REMEMBER the Ansett cup produces virtually the same result as the premiership - in a lot less time

Premiers - Essendon
Other Semi finalists - Melbourne - North - Carlton

It's worth a million dollars almost in prizes and added membership to the winner !

You don't have to know someone to get a ticket to the final - and it's still a good footy match (sometimes better)

Interstate teams never win

So how will it go this year (Its a mere 3 months away)

One team from each group is a semi finalist - it usually boils down to the tie between the 2 teams

Group 1: Essendon, Geelong, Port Adelaide, Sydney.
I select Essendon although sydney at manuka oval (Sat 3rd march) might be the hard one for them - this is the top game here

Group 2: Collingwood, St Kilda, West Coast, Kangaroos.
West coast don't take it seriously so the game between St Kilda and the Kangaroos at Manuka Oval (Sat 24th Feb) sees to be the key. Kangas have played here before

Group 3: Carlton, Adelaide, Western Bulldogs, Brisbane.
Carlton has 2 'home' games and Brisbane has 3. Expect the decider to be Brisbane v Carlton at the Gabba (Sat 3rd March)

Group 4: Richmond, Fremantle, Hawthorn, Melbourne.
Hawthorn and Melbourne to contest at colonial stadium (Sun 4th March) - though Richmond may surprise.

All but one anticipated 'decider' happens in the last round of the 'robin' so once the first round (with a little bit of interest looking at York park in Tassie)there will be enough good games each weekend to get the interest going.

The Swans don't take the ACup seriously enough to trouble Essendon at Manuka.

We'll give 'em a good game, sure but I think there is little doubt that the Bombers will be a little more 'pumped' for this one than we will be.

Having said that - we like Playing pre-season in Canberra, its virtually our home ground during Jan-Feb so at least we may find the conditions a bit easier than Essendon.

Also - we have to travel to New Zealand and Adelaide desides Canberra so I think we maybe a little tired by then

cheers

Don't expect Brisbane to go to well!! Playing in Darwin one week then Cairns the next!!! Matthews has said he won't play players in both games as it is too taxing on their health. We are talking about them playing in 35+ deg's and really bad humidity. If the AFL do agree to move one of those matches, then I would expect them to do better.

Same result as the premiership Pess?

Didn't Hawthorn beat Port in the final a couple of years ago???

I think it all depends on what each team is trying to achieve at the time. If a team had to blood someone to cover for an injured player, they will. If your depth is generally shallow, you have to put a few new players in to find out how they will go in the big stuff.

Most teams say they don't care about winning the Ansett cup (usually after a loss). If someone loses early they might be experimenting for the remainder of the draw which artificially enhances other team's prospects.

Group 3 appears to be the hardest though.

Essendon, Kangaroos, Carlton & Melbourne for the semis but I wouldn't be surprised if two were wrong.

TODN I was just referring to since they started the 'round robin' system which makes it harder for teams to 'fluke' the GF

My other point which I may have buried in detail is that to win the group you probably have to beat all the other teams - not like the round robind in the world cup where they play for draws etc - and one particular game - between the two teams which beat the other two - tends to be the decider

I expect Richmond to do well. We need the money!

Drakey,

That is an interesting point because during the 1990's we have taken the Ansett Cup prety seriously.

I will never forget the 1996 Ansett Cup Final. (Time to reminise again)

I can't remember another presentation in the last ten years that had to be cut short because of jubilant supporters invading the ground. Actually, it is pretty typical because I have still yet to see a lap of honour with the saints players holding the cup aloft.

Kangaroos in with Collingwood, St. Kilda, and West Coast will be interesting. Denis Pagan in an interview yesterday said that North Melbourne will be resting Carey, Martyn, Archer, Stevens and Blakey from the pre-season comp, so it should be a fairly young side that gets fielded. The Pies have a young side but Malthouse usually doesn't take the pre-season comp that seriously, there will be plenty of St.Kilda players who will work very hard to get into their team, while West Coast will want to ease in several players who had their 2000 season wrecked by injury.

So for my money, the Saints to get through with the Eagles edging out North.
