Deserves to be. Too much prejudice against it though - even in its own country.

Apart from that, the games biggest setbacks as far as going international are concerned would be the size of the teams and the size of the playing field.

New Zealand team? Without their New Zealand born players would make sence! I can't see the kiwi's getting a homeborn team good enough, even in one hundred years. There are other countries that AFL is bigger in than New Zealand

believe it or not footy has a foothold in countrys such as the USA, Canada, England and Denmark. If the game is to develop overseas the AFL needs to inject some serious funds into these organisations and promote junior development in their respective countries. As an Australian who now resides in the states, i'll be participating in the US league this year (once the snow melts).... afterall the AFL has just stitched up a record broadcast rights deal, how about we direct more of those funds toward international development, plus i'm sure my american friends will agree, the TV coverage in the US is SHOCKING, the AFL needs to get more national exposure in the US then they could take the largest sporting market in the world by storm!

that's it!

Disagree!

Having a dominant originating nation didn't stop basketball from spreading overseas.

I agree with the point made that the AFL have to promote and develop the game in the countries where it is already taking hold.

This is a hallucination and these faces are in a dream. A computer generated environment; a fantasy island you can do anything and not have to face the consequences.

no mags- AFL in yankeeland is behind basketball, baseball, gridiron, ice hockey, soccer, and college basketball by a LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG way...it would take countless millenia to even get close to the aussie game..that sorta replys to u too CJH

I couldn't agree more SS11, AFL is far behind too many sports to mention in that crazy place they call the united states. I won't mention popular sports in america, even though I could tell all 35 right at the moment I'm too busy playing my nintendo.

WOW a survey, by wayne'watch me thuck your game'Jackson

No, and I certainly hope it doesn't either. It's our game, leave it that way.

I think it is good to see other countries playing the game however i don't want any other countries to enter our league. It is Australia's own game, it should stay like that.

A lot of schools in the US (especially Chicago) have Australian Rules instead of Gridiron as part of their sporting curriculum because it's fast, enjoyable, no rules and more people can participate. Also American mother haven't discovered how dangerous it can be. If it continues to grow in schools, then Aussie Rules has a chance of cracking the US, but it does need better coverage. My girlfriend lived in the states for two years and was only able to get 30 minute highlight package a week.

RF1,

It would be fairly difficult for clubs from other countries, like England, to join our league.

I mean from New Zealand SO. Just like Frodo said...... but yeah i guess you got me.

I don't think it will ever be huge or anything in other countries, but I hope it's not. It's something special and unique to Australia, something we share in, and I think the game would be ruined if it became international.

I hope it never takes off in the US. Image someone like a Michael Jordan at CHF and 17 of his 6'9" mates running around with him. They'd kick our butts after they got used to the rules.

yeah mate... i tend to agree ! hmm.. if relating to nba...

imagine these speed freaks like steve francis, stephon marbury, allen iverson, latrell sprewell...

huge leapers... vince carter, tracy mcgrady, kobe bryant...

rough/tough bangers... karl malone, charles oakley, shaq, c.webber,

absolute freaks of nature (tall f*ckers that are so fast) like.. kevin garnett, rasheed wallace, marcus camby...

athletes of this nature would make an imposing afl team... this is not counting the type of atheletes found in american football! rules and footwork may be a problem at first, but then, look at soccer...

i remember some guy saying that once futbol (soccer) becomes big in the states, they could dominate the world cup for years to come... i kinda laughed at this.. but then, it wouldnt be that surprising...

just take a look at alot of those stars in europe that play pro ball, that are 'black'.. correct me if i'm wrong, even those brazilians/south americans, are of african heritage right? (pele, ronaldo, rivaldo)..

Although I don't think it will ever become a truly international game any more than Gaelic football could, I like the idea of Scandanavians playing Aussie rules.

These guys are too big and strong for soccer, too smart for rugby, too white for basketball, and the weather's too cold for cricket, baseball or any other summer sport. AFL seems like a pefect sport for them.

But they wouldn't be able to make as much money in playing Australian Rules Football.

Your Quote in one of your posts :
"Too smart for rugby"
hmmmm
the precise reason why rugby union/league is an international sport and AFL IS NOT, because many people from many countries appreciate a good football code.
(Mind you I appreciate all football codes but would like to point out that you are so totally biased)

I don't think it will ever be international, and I don't see why it has been.

I don't know how right I am, but what code has been introduced to a foreign market in the last 50 years and has really taken off? Not just a flash in the pan thing, but actually become part of the culture?

Tradition is too hard to overcome.

Cheers,
Sbagman.

Ms Storm - you are utterly and completely wrong

Rugby enjoys more of an international profile than Australian Rules because Rugby was first ceveloped in England and then taken to the rest of the world by English colonists.

Australian Rules was developed in Australia, and since Australians did not 'colonise' anywhere else in the world, the game stayed in Australia.

Accidents of history Ms Storm, nothing else, to suggest that Rugby has a higher profile than Aussie Rules because it is a better code is patent rubbish and really just shows your bias, something you love to accuse us AFL types of all the time.

BTW - Rugby League = 5 tackles and a kick, boy you must be easily amused if you think this turgid nonsense is better than the AFL.
