Saw a great post elsewhere:

Why didn’t Ley join with Albanese in a sign of national unity after the attack? Having both major party heads together at a press conference is pretty much what happens in a national tragedy in most other nations?

Why did Ley and the other Libs go on the offensive almost immediately?

It’s going to be a political sh*t show for the next 3 years

You know why.

The whole point is, that instead of the federal government being allowed to focus on social cohesion, anti-semitism, gun proliferation and so on, it has to deal with a hundred different political opportunists, be it Fredo or Pauline Hanson, either trying to launch political comebacks or fashion a Reform style political wave, on the backs of tragedy.

They don't, though. It's just noise. Frydenberg can have his say, but he's not an MP and if he wants to get back in the ring the next election is in 2028. Pauline Hanson is a senator, but One Nation hold 4 out of 75 seats and of all the cross benchers are the least likely to side with the ALP on any issue. At the end of the day if you can't handle varying public opinion and media outlets not cheerleading (was anyone expecting a Sky News puff piece about how stunning and brave Albo was?) then you probably aren't cut out for the job.

The parallel here is 1996. Howard for want of better phrasing stuck to his guns with gun reforms, the buyback scheme etc. and it upset a lot of people, most of whom are traditionally Coalition voters. The government needs to govern, and if people think they are doing a shit job of that then they will say so.

Yeah, who'd expect cheerleading?

Father of the ****ing nation :tearsofjoy:

What is your point? Ben Harvey (who?) isn't cheerleading for Albo, nor is every media outlet cheerleading for Frydenberg.

Frydenberg has already been criticised for being a political opportunist. If Albo wants to take a stand on something then he has to, you know, take a stand. And then the sentiments of the public, biased media outlets etc. will follow.

The LNP has been emboldened by a foreign war criminal to act in a manner that is against Australia's best interests. What we need now is unity, not the bullshit they're dishing up.

edit: I guess that could be war criminals, both foreign and domestic

The LNP has been urging the government to take more action to protect Jews since 2023. Not sure how that’s against Australia’s interests.

Who would want unity with the nothing burger we’re getting from Albanese?

Yeah, because playing this kind of silly politics is really going to help. Divide divide divide, that's all they can do

Safe to say people have differing definitions of unity.

As a law abiding citizen of voting age I would say the government doing nothing and the opposition standing in solidarity with doing nothing isn't really in anyone's best interests.

It would be nice to see something be treated as a bipartisan issue, but bipartisan nothing is still nothing.

Opposition is literally the job of the Opposition. How about the government unites with them for once?

the lnp did nothing when repeatedly asked/warned about the unfolding social catastrophe that was robodebt

for them [and you] to now be alleging no action in the face of growing concern within the jewish community is laughably hypocritical

What is the relevance of robodebt to this?

Defending the Jewish community against antisemitism isn’t a principle? Okay.
The ALP has consistently spoken out against anti-Semitism. What the Liberal Party want is for Labor to take back its comments opposing genocide and war crimes in Palestine, and to back Netanyahu completely. Their definition of anti-Semitism is anti-Israel and that's no more true than opposing Donald Trump's vile government is anti-Christian. It is possible for the government to oppose anti-Semitism and oppose the killing of 70,000 mostly women and children, journalists and doctors, as well as blockades that lead to starvation.

Benjamin Netanyahu is a corrupt war criminal, I say that not because he's Jewish but because he's a campaigner.

No, in this situation we come together and the opposition leaves petty politicking out of it, but this current iteration is too self-serving for that. Sniping from the shadows is all they're good for.
