Granted that you have managed to recruit some good players but there have been some bad picks as well.

1998
Daniel Schell
Garth Taylor

1999
Ashley Prescott
Adam Butler

2000
Brad Bootsma
Adam Mcphee

2001
Simon Eastaugh
Schell we trader for pick 56 (Medhurst) got one back on the crows :D

Mc phee is a good player who was part of the deal for Headland.

Eastaugh was a late pick as a backup ruckman (worked)

Presscott & Bootsma were servicable so that kist is no where near as bad as you imply.

You're right, but you also can't claim that Judge brought him to the club.
I am sorry I assumed he was on the rookie list for only one season. so Judgey didnt bring him to the club so I'm one down.

No I'm not I forgot about Wilson (the best mature age draftee ever).

And i mean that.

What's wrong with McPhee. We got him at #39 and now he is holding down a key position at Essendon.

Prescott was good for us as well. I was always a fan of his.

Schell had good attributes as a kid (pretty quick, good grab, tall). Unfortunately he didn't live up to his potential and we got Medhurst for him.

You are spot on (on Wilson)- and I basically agreed with your original post. Judge did a very good job of identifying young talent and developing it. Unfortunately some of my colleagues don't recognise this strength.

Just wanted to set the story straight on Kasey, he's been in the system for quite a while now and really SHOULD be performing.

All of these players are still on the list and most have become regulars.

2000
Andrew Mcdougall
Dan Kerr
Jeremy Humm
Trent Carrol
Micheal Collica
Greg Harding (ok we got you there :D)
Mark Merenda
Micheal Prior
David Sierakowski
Richard Taylor
Dean Cox
Kasey Green

So instead of selectively picking a couple of dud deals look at the whole picture and relealize thet Judgey set you ungrateful pricks up.

Go Dockers

Of the rest Prior Merenda Collica Taylor and Harding were past there use by date.

Not too bad

OK You said it - it is more than likely fact, all recriuted during the JT era and who else was recruited in this era ??? I am very sure a good majority of the premiership side ;)
1988
McKenna (Premiership Player)
Langdon (PP)
Waterman (PP)
Rance
Hutton
Ugle
Cormack
David O'Connell
Kevin Caton

1989
Bremen
Higgins
Hynes (PP)
Crough
Bartsch
Williamson
Richardson
Berto
Geddes
Melesso

Out of the 2 Todd years, only 3 of the above players played in a Premiership with Hynes being the 4th who played in the 94 win.

So, no, the bulk of the 2 GF sides were not from the Todd era.

However, I used to joke about the Claremont Dockers, this list looks more like the Swan Districts Eagles.

And how did you get the Haselby's and Pavlich's of this world...by losing.....A LOT!!

I'd rather win and take our chances with late picks and intelligent trades than lose, lose and then lose some more, then when we get top 5 picks for years and years on end, continue to lose. :D

Oh and on Judge....I never thought he was particularly bad at finding and developing talent. He was just a bad, bad coach. Ken Judge would help any AFL club in a recruiting job, he just doesnt have what it takes to be a coach.

Agreed.

Just a bad communicator and does not know how to treat his players. Tactically useless too. Has no idea at times. I think we would have been better off with Robbie Wiley for the 2 years we had KJ.

We also haven't got the Reiwoldt's, Koschitzke's, Ball's, Goddard's and Clarke's of this world, but i'm sure as hell not upset we don't perform like St Kilda.

You can't credit KJ with recruiting the draftees as it was a collective coaching panel decision made on recommendations by our scouts. At Hawthorn, he may have pointed the scouts in the direction of WA talents, but I strongly doubt he identified them.

Like I've said previously, I'm not about to thank KJ for putting us in a position to have low enough draft picks to snare Judd, Sampi and McDougall.

Get real everyone knows the coach has the final say.

Mc dougall was drafted in 2000 before "the Year you had to have".

Oh, so the coach does the scouting or makes the final decision based on gut instinct? Silly me, how could I not realise that?

KJ was responsible for our fantastic ladder position in 2000, hence he's responsible for our low draft pick.

This was the thing I most hated about John Todd as Eagles coach. He just brought in his own from Swans, almost appearing to be unable to see skill from anywhere else. I always though of this lot as the "Toddy's boys" who shouldn't have got a game in in a fit. Ugle was the best of these, and I never thought much of him.

Agreed.

Being a Swans man even I could not understand why some of these guys got a game. Rance was a sook and did not like to play it hard. One exception was the final H&A game in 88 where he played on Peter Foster against Footscray and helped us into our first finals.

The rest are hacks and should never have been drafted. Ugle is the stand out though and the game in 1990 against the Saints will be in my memory forever. He had 6 goals kicked on him and was dragged in the second quarter. The Eagles were 50 points down at half time. Ugle then played in the forward pocket after half time and kicked 6 goals helping us overcome the Saints and win the match.

Hiring Ken Judge as senior coach was the worst mistake in the clubs history. He's good working with the development of young players, but as a tactical match day coach he's never cut the mustard.
