That Melbourne side finished 11th though, weren't that bad. I'm pretty sure it was an attempt to get the CEO fired.
Can't believe we went through all that tanking crap and that game was never looked at. Only game that has ever actually been thrown.

2000 Bombers vs 2008 Cats would be pretty good. Cats were amazing until about 5 minutes into the 2nd quarter of the 08 Grand Final.

People talk about 2017 being a weak year, 2000 was one of the most insipid in living memory (Melbourne made the GF For Goodness Sake!)

I reckon Geelong 89 v Geelong 2007 would be popcorn-worthy. Right mixture of super high-scoring, genuine loonies, hard nuts, getting to see GAS and GAJ in a game.

Questions for the Cats fans - who goes to who in the 89 forward line, with Brownless, Stoneham and Ablett to cover? And where is Mark Yeates heading when the ball gets bounced? :D

I actually think that Cats team would get better under 80s umpiring. Scarlett, Rooke, Chapman, Mooney, Hunt and Milburn were all hard as nails and would have cherished being able to cream blokes on and off the ball.

Would be a ripping contest.
Spot on. Had a real nasty streak and would have loved the 80s.

there are no other teams worthy
If anyone doubts how good this side was, watch highlights of R4, 1982 - third quarter. I was too little to go, but my brother still has recurring nightmares about it.
I remember being there and can find myself in the crowd if I look hard. Man that was an awesome game. In the best two or three games I ever been to.

Not to mention Hawthorn coming off a casual 150 point win the week before including an 11-goal third quarter... bit of a hard landing...

Didn't the Blues settle this in 99' ;)
Well no actually. Their 1 point win in 1999 PF was achieved with a Herculean performance from their best player against a Bombers side minus Hird who missed virtually the whole season. 2000 Essendon side with Hi rd on deck was so much stronger.

As usual with BF threads asking for GOAT teams/players or here greatest "of any era", anything before 1980 is either ignored altogether or disparaged. In the interests of balance, I'd like to see Essendon of late 40s against Melbourne of mid to late 50s, each of which played 7 consecutive GFs. I'd nominate 1950 as best Dons side of the era. What do Dees fans reckon was their champion of Champions time from that golden era.

Surely WCE 92/94 win this by a massive margin. That was a great side. Putt Judd on a wing please = Matera V Judd :)
Probably favour 92/94. Though with Cox feeding the 05/06 midfield, as good as the 92/94 midfield was I think the later side would win the clearances. Could just come down to that McKenna, Jakovich, Worsfold half back line. Would likely easily contain and beat their opponents, springboarding attacks. If the 05/06 mids were committed forward, 92/94 would carve them up.

Geelong 07 would belt them - the 89 side were gutless snipers. Love to see Scarlett destroy that prick Bruns.
