To explain the discrepancies between father son and academy selections in terms of the discount I think theres a bit of an unwritten rule amongst teams in the afl to allow father-son selections to fall through to the team thats nominated the player. Therefore the bids for those players aren't as high as they might be if they were academy selections, meaning the points required to match the bid is reduced and hence at least imo could be the reason for a reduced discount.
Then why did Daniher , McDonald and Moore all go as 1st rounders ?

Ah man, just when we're set for a string of F/S picks they change the rules?

Looks like West Coast will have to ship all the potential picks overseas or large co-ed camps so they aren't rated.

Why don't we just set up our own NSW academy? Don't we have a relationship with some East Coast Eagles team? Just expand that into an academy, i don't see why a club should have to be from the state.
We got Ryan Davis on the rookie list through a NSW/ACT scholarship, not sure if that was something remotely similar or not.

Bit odd to change the rule when it worked pretty well to begin with.

Haha Jordie Matera is a funny looking kid.
Would you say Ablettesque? Medium built 182cm mid/ half forward with long arms. With any luck he starts balding by 20 and then his future stardom will be all but confirmed

At least Jordan would have had 20 years with hair poor Shannon Hurn was balding at 12 !

Father/sons and academy players are completely different situations so the bidding systems shouldn't be the same

F/S are one of the few bits of romance left in the game and we should be encouraging a system whereby players can find a pathway to the club their father played at. The bidding system as it is now is fine as it means clubs need to use a pick somewhere near a players true value but still unders admittedly.

I understand the academy system as a way to develop the game in non football states and the argument that it helps attracting players to the game if they're less likely to have to move state to play at the elite level. But it doesn't wash that those four clubs get to benefit from a system they don't pay for (all northern clubs are subsidised by the AFL so even if they pay for the academy the money comes back to them)

The heeney problem could have been fixed to an extent by allowing GWS to bid for him.

In any case the academy issue needs to be addressed, father/sons doesn't
Spot on with the concept of extending to GWS, competition brings about openness. Simple way of introducing competition in the Academies would be to have 2 academies - one in NSW that feeds Swans and GWS and one in Qld that feeds Suns and Lions. There would be at least 2 clubs bidding on each recruit!

Likewise give over NT to the 2 South Australian clubs and the NW of WA to Fro and Eagles. By simply having 2 clubs, you get a stronger chance of the picks going where they should. Unless the local rivals decide to wax!!

Now the inequity - who pays for the academies? If the AFL pays, then no benefit to the local sides (a la TAC). If the local sides pay, then yes they deserve some priority (a la Swans). What about the WAFL colts? The AFL pays around $50k per recruit but otherwise the 2 WA clubs pay the WAFC a hefty dividend and ...... Give us the financial freedom or let us build the remote academies.

The most interesting absentee is Hart's son.

Also Sumich is plainly a little taller than he was listed as for the U16 champs (185). Standing next to Jake Waterman (187.5) and Sam Powell-Pepper (187)

was talking for mostly players outside the top 20 in terms of clubs being less worried about bidding, but all those players were taken lower than where they would have been taken anyway, but yes point taken clubs aren't going to let gun players fall too low

I'm guessing he's on the left as Jake is on the right?

Harts son will no doubt be back in school so a trip interstate may not have been viable.

Hart moved back to WA last year. Was subsequently doing some work with Eagles camps last year.

Ah fair enough. He might not have been pictured as Jordan wasn't in the photos and pretty sure he said in an interview a few weeks back he would be here for the camp.

Sweet jesus, didn't realise their was a third Waterman boy?!

Good work Muddy!!!!

I hope Alec can get a few games this year & lights it up. The Victorian tears will be delicious...

Sunny Kemp is an odd looking boy, whilst Woosh Jr. is a spitting image of his father.

Really hope Mainy Jr. sticks at it, would be a great story if he became an Eagle!
