Saw Mondays show at the Hi Fi

Good without reaching any great heights ... a little Stodgy and rusty for mine.

Am i being harsh ?

For those holding out for the new album ... they have spent the last 5 months writing and recording in LA and are barely half way there so don`t hold your breath .

One new track in particular ..."What If" had "belter" written all over it .

Top effort to sell out the Hi Fi bar twice though i must say :thumbsu:

I love Cog, for my money they're one of the best Australian live bands going around at the moment. Even though I was a little disappointed with the Just Visiting to New Normal transition, they still manage to rock the shit out of the songs live.

I think that's how this new stuff will go, it'll sound great live but wont record very well.
Being in Adelaide I'm not getting this tour but I saw them last time they played when they played with Sunk Loto. Of the 3 or 4 new ones they played I was quite impressed. There was 1 song I didn't much care for but it had moments, sort of how I felt about Silence is Violence when they first started playing it live actually.

Had to wait 3 years for the last CD so if they can get this one out before years end, I'll be pleased. Of course if they don't then I'll get over it.

Was the Monday show the one supported by Laura? If so, what did you think?

Of Laura? Absolute nonsense.

Cog were fantastic. Some of the new stuff sounded like it had ripping potential, and they were even tighter than the Palace gig from last year.

Lucious is a machine.

Missed em this time. Have seen em 5-6 times though. I'm sure I'll see em again, maybe when the new album comes out. Probably my fave Aussie band, with Karnivool.

second that .... just noise ... pompous , overblown carp
Chello (or whatever the hell that was), 2 guitars, a bass guitar, a bloke on a keyboard and a "drummer", all of it getting in the way of the other and none of them sounding remotely half decent. And they all looked ridiculous in their cardigans, convinced they were re-incarnations Floyd crossed with bloody Enya or some such crapola.

####fest.

and how pi.ss weak these "artists" could cannot put any lyrics to it .

Speaking of Floyd ... how good was the "drum&bass/reggae" version of "dark side of the moon" they were playing between sets ?:thumbsu:

I happened to catch cog on monday and karnivool last night.
If i had to choose between the two I am a COG man through and through, however, based on the two shows this week I thought Karnivool absolutely blew cog out of the water last night.
As per most of the previous comments, i thought cog were lacking a little on monday (all the o/s travel and constant recording etc prob hasn`t helped) and seemed a tad rusty. But last night Karnivool were one polished outfit, with a MASSIVE sound and a bundle of energy.

Both bands played 3 new songs in their respective sets and i couldn`t help but think that Karnivool had seriously progressed (two of the new songs were very long and much more complex than their Themata stuff) and unfortunately cog has regressed somewhat. I personally thought that cog`s new stuff was much more simplistic and basic than their previous stuff - almost like they were aiming at a "MMM type crowd" (sorry, but non-Melbourne people mightn`t know what I`m referring to there).
Having said that though, I will be reserving any real judgement on their new stuff until I hear the new album.

I would go as far as to say that Karnivool is in the very top echelon (ie 2-3) of live bands in the country. They absolutely blew my socks off!!!
I await both the new albums..........:thumbsu:

PS. I also thought "Laura" were flippin` useless.
Four people with tuned instruments creating repetitive, annoying, washy, tuneless, feedback-like sounds with drums over the top of it all is definatley not my cup-o-tea.

I agree with what you say. Have seen both bands multiple times, and while I give 'The New Normal' a very slight edge over 'Themata' in the album stakes, I have to say, as much as I love Cog live, I give Karnivool the edge live. Their shows are just joyous occasions. I would rate them as clearly best live band in Oz.

Yeah when Karnivool played at MsFest and said "we're going to play a new song" I thought, ok they're still getting the hang of it and it'll be 3-4 minutes.

9 bloody minutes long and I couldnt put a fault to it. :thumbsu:

Anyway I wish Cog would remember this little island below Australia, it'd be sweet to see 'em again because they were awesome last time.

So the general consensus is that majority of Cog fans don't like post-rock. Fair enough, personally I think Laura are pretty rad but I can see why people don't like them, like most music it's not for everyone. I was just interested to see what other people think of them. I never thought they'd be a good idea for Cog support, doesn't at all fit their demographic.

I have to disagree with this, just because there are no vocals it doesn't mean they're any less of a group of artists than anyone else. It's just as difficult to make a song work without lyrics as it is to write lyrics that aren't crap. Just look at the old composers like Mozart and so on, many of their arrangements were entirely musical (possibly all, I'm not an expert on this). People that do movie scores are also just as much valid artists as any band with vocals.

To be perfectly honest, I think Karnivool are some of the most boring musicians in Australia right now. I listened to Themata a few times and it's possibly one of the most bland, boring and predictable albums I've ever heard. But they're clearly doing something right because whether or not I think it's tripe, it's appealing to someone else out there so good on them.
