My dog and best mate Winston died a couple of nights ago. He was only 8. Woke up in the morning and he was fine. Got home and he was lying on the floor, and wee'd himself. Took him to the vet, things went down hill really quickly. Apparently was bleeding internally. They told us an infection or likely a burst tumour. Vet said they wanted $7000 to keep him overnight and stablisie him then open him up, and gave him little chance. While we were trying to make a decision his heart gave out. Apparently.

Just hoping that the vet didnt screw us round. Ive heard some bad stories. He was so young, fit, no signs of bad health at all. And dead in 6 hours. Hope they just didnt want to get him out the door. The seemed quite rude and abrupt.

Have never, ever been so upset. Not even when my grandparents died. The missus is also devastated. :(

Just wondering if anyone has stories out there, and should I put my conspiracies to bed.

Im not expert, but in my experience with vets they all love animals (sometimes it appears more than humans), so I really doubt there would be any funny buggers here. Unfortunately shit like this just happens. It sucks, I know, but it does. :(

I don't have any pets, but my parents had a very similar situation with one of their cats.

The cat was very healthy, only 6 years old and very active. One morning they woke up and noticed that the cat was wondering around looking dizzy, so off they went to the vet. The vet informed them that the cat was suffering from internal injuries and told them it would be in their best interests to put him down. She told them that surgery woul've cost $11,000 plus.

Hey mate, obviously it's a shit thing to have happen. I understand that you're feeling devastated and it's not the most pleasant thing to talk about. I'll give you a bit of info about what probably happened and if the vet was in the wrong.

Seemingly healthy people and animals die suddenly all the time and it's a shame Winston was one of them. It sounds like what caused the problem was a large bleed that resulted in him not having much blood to pump around his body. After a while when there isn't much blood going around we get a bit sleepy and tired and eventually we flop down to the floor for a nice rest. After a while we don't get enough blood flow to the organs and brain and we simply drift off.

It's not a bad way to go and it's not painful or distressing, unless you're a human and you realise lying down and going to sleep might be a bad idea when you've got a vague pain in your side. Dogs are just as likely to get tumours as humans and most likely a bleed from a tumour penetrating a blood vessel is the source of the problem. It most likely wouldn't have been very painful.

I don't the the vet had a vendetta against you - and it's extremely unlikely that anything they did would have saved him. Sometimes unfortunate things like this happen and I don't think the vet was to blame. Paying the $7,000 wouldn't have helped either so don't beat yourself up.

Condolences MB. From what you've written thou it seems like the vet followed standard practice. As in quoting and leaving you to decide.

Sorry to hear they were rude and they should have handled it better but that could've been for any number of reasons not related to your dog.

RIP Winston.

Vets make one big commitment in undertaking the years of study, are lovely people who work long hours under difficult conditions with sometimes fretting owners. They see some full on stuff, that shouldn't be seen.Beautiful people.Do alot of stuff for nothing.

Should be a vets day, like they have for various other community stuff.

I'm so sorry to hear your loss, my nine year old much loved Dizzy dog went down hill over a 6 hour period, she had a tumour.
I had to make the decision that day to put her down there and then without no prior warning.
It was heart breaking and took me about 6 weeks to get it back together, still miss her heaps.

If you really want to get that cynical about it, then ask yourself why would a vet turn down the possibility of getting $7000 by killing your dog???

Thanks mate, this fits in well with everything that happened. Think Im just getting over the shock of losing him so quickly! Vets obviously become vets for no reason - they love animals and pursue a career to do the best by them.

Thanks for all the condolences everyone. Much appreciated.

My sister had a pet Guinea Pig that was not eating and losing weight. She took it to the local Vet who said that it was probably just old age and that there was nothing he could do, best to put it down and part with $300. As she frequently fed him grains, she suggested that there may be one stuck up his nose. The Vet didn't agree and made his offer again. My sister didn't like the sound of this and sought a second opinion. The second Vet explored the grain idea and sure enough he found one stuck up his nose. Removed the grain and put him on antibiotics. The GP lived for another 3 years.

A family friend had a pet dog. He noticed it had a lump on it's foot and took it to the same Vet. The Vet offered the same solution as before. Once again, our friend didn't agree with the Vet's decision and took the dog home. After doing some research on the net, found that putting Turmeric (believe it or not) on a Tumour can reduce it. He started applying it to the dog's foot everyday. The tumour disappeared within a month! That was 6 months ago and the dog is now doing fine.

My point is that there are good Vets and bad, but if you are unsure, seek a second opinion.
